Silverstone savours Saloon Showdown

The British Automobile Racing Club made its final appearance of the year at the Home of British Motor Racing, Silverstone, this past weekend (October 3-4) for what turned out to be a Saloon Showdown of epic proportions.

One week on from the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship’s historic visit to the world-famous venue, more tin top categories took centre stage in Northamptonshire - albeit this time on the coveted International layout.

With titles on the line and challengers looking to stake their claim, the two-day meeting had everyone watching on the edge of their seats - whether they were trackside or watching around the world on YouTube.

The Britcar Endurance Championship is poised to enjoy a frenetic finish next month after a bumper grid of almost 30 cars entertained the masses over the course of 90-minutes on Saturday afternoon.

Nick Hull and Richard Avery - running under the Full Throttle Motorsport banner - proved to be the toast of the competition as they reigned supreme by more than 40 seconds in their Porsche 992.1 Cup car.

Joining them on the overall podium was the ES Motorsport duo of Chris Kemp and Stuart Hall in their Lamborghini Super Trofeo and Woodrow’s Christopher Murphy, who was third in his BMW M3 E46.

The Classic Touring Car Racing Club rolled back the years as a whole host of iconic machines showed what they are all about on the hallowed Silverstone tarmac, staging four amalgamated races in total.

Ford Escort Mk1 racer Tom Harvey ruled the roost when it came to the combined Pre-66 and Pre-83 races as he swept his way to a dominant double. Harvey proved to be the top Pre-83 runner, while Oliver Law was the man to beat when it came to the Pre-66 ranks.

Meanwhile, two bumper Pre-03, Pre-03, Pre-13, Blue Oval Saloon Series and Classic Thunder Saloon races were won by Dave Farrow in a BMW 1 Series and James Janicki in a Nissan Skyline GTR R32.

Elsewhere, Ollie Smith followed in the footsteps of his brother Harry to become the latest title winner of the Junior Saloon Car Championship. Having been the driver to beat all year, the talented teenager ensured he did enough to secure t

With championship glory at the forefront of his mind, Silverstone was one of the few weekends this year that Smith hadn’t triumphed in a race. Instead, that honour fell the way of Max Scharfeggar who completed a sublime hat-trick.

Unmissable action has been part and parcel of the Caffeine & Machine Caterham Academy Championship all-year long, so it was rather fitting that that theme continued at the final round of the season.

With drivers putting everything they have learnt in their first year of car racing into the series finale, the gloves well and truly came off. And in the end, Bill Mulholland reigned supreme in race one before Phil McGovern claimed a long overdue maiden win in the second encounter.

Elsewhere, there were double-winning performances in both the Adrian Flux Insurance MG Owners Club Championship and the OT Coupe Cup with Toyo Tires over the course of the weekend.

Matthew Harvey proved to be the cream of the crop in the MGOC Championship as he hustled his MG ZR to a flawless brace. Nathan James Boyle achieved a similar feat in his Coupe Cup to cap off what has been a fine season.

The final chapter of the Track Action Racing Club saw spoils be shared between Adam Read and Adam Croft, whilst Lee Harpham and Liam Morley both triumphed in the Superkart Super Series by the BSRC.
