Julian Godfrey clinches sixth British Rallycross Championship title at Croft

Julian Godfrey added another chapter to his illustrious racing history this past weekend (October 26/27) as he clinched a sixth Toyo Tires Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship title at Croft Circuit.

Edging out season-long protagonist Derek Tohill at the North Yorkshire venue amidst challenging weather conditions, the Ford Fiesta driver reigned supreme to win his first title since 2015 by just two points.

Locked in a head-to-head fight for the coveted prize since the opening round of the season back in March, the pendulum between Godfrey and Tohill has swung both ways over the course of the year – however it all came to a head at Croft.

Saturday would see Godfrey power his way to a fourth victory of 2019 in sensational fashion; triumphing despite suffering from a transmission and engine issue which resulted in the team working through the night to ensure he could race on Sunday.

Dominating qualifying and starting from pole position in the final race of the season, Godfrey could do nothing to stop Ford Fiesta compatriot Tohill from bagging his fourth win of the season.

Second place on the road however as more than enough for the Heathfield-based racer to claim a record sixth crown and cement his status as one of the great British Rallycross Championship competitors.

“It’s brilliant to win the Championship for the sixth time. I didn’t make the best of starts in the last race so I tucked in behind Derek (Tohill), saw Tony (Bardy) hadn’t made a good start next to me so I had some space and was able to follow Derek round and play it safe,” said Godfrey.

“I knew I just had to finish second, I pulled a bit of a gap from Steve (Hill) behind and just concentrated on getting to the end with no mistakes to take the Championship. It’s been a good close season, I’m really pleased.”

Elsewhere, Tristan Ovenden completed a third successive title-winning campaign with two more victories to ensure he maintained his unbeaten clean sweep in the two-drive category.

Luke Constantine secured the Motorsport UK Junior Rallycross Championship title by a single point over Patrick O’Donovan in the final weekend of the season.

One year on from winning that very crown, Tom Constantine savoured title success once again as he overcame the odds and three other drivers to lift the Swift Sport Rallycross Championship.

Drew Bellerby triumphed on home soil as she clinched the BMW Mini Rallycross Championship whilst Chrissy Palmer recorded an unprecedented fifth consecutive RX150 Rallycross title.

Rounding out the list of victors was Gary Simpson who won the final round of the Retro Rallycross Championship on Saturday to maintain his unbeaten run and claim the crown.

British Rallycross Championship title-decider to take centre stage at Croft Circuit

The destiny of the Toyo Tires Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship title will be decided at Croft Circuit this weekend (October 26/27) with the North Yorkshire venue staging what promises to be a blockbuster double-header season finale.

In what is set to be an action-packed final chapter of 2019, Julian Godfrey and Derek Tohill will go head-to-head one more time to decide who will reign supreme and walk away as champion.

Setting their stalls out at the Silverstone opener in March as the ones to watch, both Godfrey and Tohill have proven to be the class of the field this year and have each tallied three wins apiece.

Whilst Godfrey is bidding to become a six-time British Rallycross champion, Irishman Tohill is aiming to lift the coveted title for the first time – adding the crown to what is already an impressive resume.

Just two points separate the Ford Fiesta duo at the head of the standings and with it all to play for, edge-of-the-seat entertainment is all-but guaranteed around the challenging croft configuration.

Although the title fight will captivate most peoples attention over the course of the weekend, a host of other drivers will be aiming to sign off their 2019 campaigns on a high in the Supercar category too.

Local drivers ‘Mad Mark’ and Tony Bardy will make a popular return to action whilst the likes of Steve Hill, Andy Grant, Simon Horton and Steve Mundy will all be in the mix for the podium too.

It won’t just be the Supercar title that will be decided at Croft either; with the Motorsport UK Junior Rallycross Championship, Swift Sport Rallycross Championship and BMW Mini Rallycross Championship crowns all being settled.

Sideways thrills and spills will also be provided by the Motorsport UK Supernational Rallycross Championship – which includes an eclectic mix of two-wheel drive machinery – as well as the Super Retro Rallycross Championship and RX150 Rallycross Championship.

Tickets will be available to purchase on the gate, priced at ÂŁ15.00, on both Saturday and Sunday. Head to https://www.croftcircuit.co.uk/racing/british-rallycross for further event information.

Derek Tohill triumphs at Pembrey to take British Rallycross Championship fight down to the wire

The destiny of the 2019 Toyo Tires Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship will go down to the wire at Croft next month after Derek Tohill served up a near-perfect performance to score victory at Pembrey this past weekend (September 21/22).

Making its second visit to South Wales this year for the penultimate event of the season, the adrenaline-fuelled series was in full force as it produced a weekend to remember on-track.

Adopting the two-day FIA World Rallycross Championship event format for the first time, a bumper crowd enjoyed a feast of entertainment as title protagonists Derek Tohill and Julian Godfrey went wheel-to-wheel for outright honours.

Proving to be the cream of the crop this year already, the Ford Fiesta duo couldn’t be separated across the four qualifying heats, both of them tallying two wins apiece to set up an intriguing grand final.

Hitting the front as the lights went out, Tohill wasted no time on stretching his advantage and powered his way towards  crucial victory. Behind, contact at the first corner scuppered Godfrey’s as he finished second despite picking up a puncture in the closing stages.

Roger Thomas gave the locals plenty to cheer about too as he rounded out the podium whilst both Steve Hill and Andy Grant found themselves in strife and out of the action.

Tohill’s triumph now means that just two points separate the top two heading to Croft at the end of next month.

As always, alongside the Toyo Tires Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship Supercar action was a host of blockbuster thrills and spills from a variety of supporting categories.

The Motorsport UK Junior Rallycross Championship saw Luke Constantine and Ben Sayer triumph whilst Motorsport UK Supernational Rallycross Championship honours fell the way of the formidable Tristan Ovenden.

Drew Bellerby and David Bell shared the spoils in the BMW Mini Rallycross Championship, with Will Layton and Max Weatherley doing the same in the Swift Sport Rallycross Championship.

Rounding out the list of winners from Pembrey was Gary Simpson and Chrissy Palmer, who ran out victorious in the Retro Rallycross Championship and RX150 Championship respectively.

Julian Godfrey scorches to British Rallycross Championship victory at Lydden Hill

Julian Godfrey took a step closer to clinching a sixth Toyo Tires Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship title this past Bank Holiday Monday (August 26) as the Ford Fiesta driver reigned supreme at Lydden Hill.

Battling searing temperatures at the Kent venue, Godfrey produced a scorching performance to take control of the overall standings with double-header events at Pembrey and Croft now only remaining on the 2019 calendar.

Heading into the fourth event of the season tied on points with chief title protagonist Derek Tohill, the battle for supremacy across both loose and tarmac surfaces reached fever pitch in front of a bumper trackside crowd.

Tohill would strike first on race day as he powered his Ford Fiesta to the fastest time in the first round of qualifying heats, before Godfrey then did the same in both Q2 and Q3.

Jack Thorne, who was making his first Supercar start in three years, underlined his credentials as one to watch as he got the launch as the lights went out for the final and leapt into an early lead from behind the wheel of his Ford Fiesta.

Despite the strong start from the front row Thorne was unable to hold off the charging Godfrey who retook the lead at the end of the opening lap. From there, the former champion was unstoppable and went on to score his third win of the season.

Tohill emerged from an almighty scrap for third place to claim the final spot on the podium, albeit narrowly ahead of the charging Steve Hill.

In the Motorsport UK Supernational Rallycross Championship, Tristan Ovenden continued his unbeaten run of form to score yet another victory, leading Peter McGarry and Darren Scott across the line in an ultra-competitive final.

Patrick O’Donovan, son of former British RX champion Ollie O’Donovan, moved to the summit of the Motorsport UK Junior Rallycross Championship standings as he claimed his first win of the season in impressive fashion.

Tom Constantine delivered a controlled drive in the Swift Sport Rallycross Championship whilst Drew Bellerby took a lights-to-flag victory in the BMW Mini Rallycross Championship.

Rounding out the list of winners at Lydden Hill was Gary Simpson, who reigned supreme in the Retro Rallycross Championship.

Tallying two wins apiece, the Ford Fiesta duo have been the cream of the crop so far and will undoubtedly be in the mix for outright honours at Lydden Hill.

Julian Godfrey and Derek Tohill share British Rallycross Championship spoils at Pembrey

The Toyo Tires Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship delivered a blockbuster two days of action at Pembrey Circuit this past weekend (June 22/23) as Julian Godfrey and Derek Tohill shared the spoils.

Descending on South Wales for the first of two visits to the British Automobile Racing Club-run venue this year, the action-packed series served up plenty of thrills and spills – keeping those in attendance on the edge-of-their-seats.

Bright sunshine greeted championship and an enthusiastic crowd on Saturday, with multiple champion Godfrey wasting no time at all in establishing himself as the man to beat. Powering his way to the fastest times in heats one and two, the Ford Fiesta driver was edged out by Ollie O’Donovan in the final block of heats.

Lining up on the front row of the grid for the final, Godfrey enjoyed a strong start and ultimately went on to record a lights-to-flag victory around the challenging Pembrey layout, moving into the points lead at the same time.

Whilst Godfrey made his escape out front, Lydden Hill winner Tohill and O’Donovan became embroiled in an almighty scrap for second place. Tohill would take the chequered flag in second place however a time penalty for contact with the former championship dropped him to third.

Sunday saw racing run in the reverse direction however that didn’t have any effect on the non-stop entertainment that was being produced.

Dominating the day previously, Godfrey showed all the hallmarks of someone who was on his way to repeat his heroics on day two at the Welsh venue, sweeping his way to lead all three qualifying heats.

However, FIA European Rallycross champion Tohill made it two wins apiece between himself and Godfrey as he scored victory. O’Donovan had finished third on the road but a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits saw him to drop to fourth, with Roger Thomas benefitting.

In the Motorsport UK Supernational Rallycross Championship, Tristan Ovenden continued his rich vein of form with victory on the Saturday before then doubling his tally on Sunday at the wheel of his Renault Clio V6.

Meanwhile, the next generation of rallycross stars took centre stage in the Motorsport UK Junior Rallycross Championship with Roberts Vitols claiming overall honours on both days.

Meanwhile David Bell, Max Weatherly, Jon Armstrong and Gary Simpson were victorious in the BMW Mini Rallycross Championship, Swift Sport Rallycross Championship, RX150 Rallycross Championship and Retro Rallycross Championship races respectively.

On day two, the quartet of Drew Bellerby, Will Layton, Chrissy Palmer and Simpson topped the rostrum.

The Toyo Tires Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship is next in action at Lydden Hill on August 26.

British Rallycross Championship revved up for Pembrey Circuit double-header

Pembrey Circuit will welcome the Toyo Tires Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship to South Wales this weekend (June 22/23) as the series gets ready to continue its 2019 with the annual double-header event.

In what is the first of two visits to the British Automobile Racing Club-run venue this year, the UK’s premier rallycross championship will tackle the challenging Pembrey track in both directions across rounds three and four.

With events at Silverstone and Lydden Hill already in the books, two-time FIA European Rallycross champion Derek Tohill finds himself at the top of the points standings following victory last time out.

At the wheel of his Ford Fiesta, Tohill will be one to watch as he bids to build up an advantage over his nearest challenger, five-time British champion Julian Godfrey.

Having scored victory at the Silverstone season-opener, Godfrey has switched back to his trust Ford Fiesta and remains behind the wheel of it this weekend as he aims to regain control at the standings summit.

Ollie O’Donovan, another former champion, has endured a character-building start to the campaign and will be keen to put the opening two events behind him and bounce back in sensational style.

Mike Manning, Roger Thomas, Steve Hill, Nigel Burke, Andy Grant and Simon Horton are all also set to take to the grid in the Supercar class and any one of them could spring a surprise at the sharp end of the grid too.

It won’t just be the Toyo Tires Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship taking centre stage over the course of the weekend however as a bumper supporting cast will equally set pulses racing across Saturday and Sunday as well.

The Motorsport UK Supernational Championship, Motorsport UK Junior Rallycross Championship, Swift Sport Championship, BMW Mini Championship, Retro Rallycross Championship and RX150 Championship will all be in action too.

Derek Tohill claims maiden British Rallycross victory at Lydden Hill

Derek Tohill stormed to the summit of the Toyo Tires Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship standings on Easter Monday (April 22) after claiming his first victory in the adrenaline-fuelled series at Lydden Hill.

Descending on the Kent circuit for the traditional bank holiday meeting, the second event of the season threw up yet more entertainment as the Irishman got the better of former champion Ollie O’Donovan in a pulsating final.

O’Donovan had been the man to beat in the first two rounds of heats, setting the fastest time at the wheel of his Ford Fiesta however it would be Tohill that set the pace in the third and final qualifier.

Keen to bounce back from a tough season-opener, O’Donovan began the final on pole position with Tohill second and round one winner Julian Godfrey completing the front row. As the lights went out, Godfrey immediately took his joker lap as the top two scrapped for the lead.

O’Donovan held off Tohill through the first corner, Chesson’s Drift, and powered into a lead he held until the fourth lap when he was passed by Tohill, who had elected to take his joker one lap earlier.

Godfrey threw himself into contention in the closing stages but neither could stop Tohill from taking the chequered flag in his striking Ford Fiesta.

“It’s amazing to win here, it was a great job by everyone in the team all day. We worked hard for this, but it feels like we really earned it,” Tohill said. “It was a hustle out there with Ollie, I got him off the line then he sank himself down the inside into the first corner, which drifted me out wide. Then I had to keep the pressure on and try to pass him, or force him into an early joker. I had one lap to do it after I took the joker and I put in a real good lap so it was just enough. It was a brilliant end to the day to get the win.

Tristen Ovenden extended his lead in the  Motorsport UK Supernational Rallycross Championship as he dominated proceedings at his home track. Emerging as the driver to beat throughout qualifying, the Renault Clio V6 race led Paige Bellerby in the final to score an emphatic victory.

The Motorsport UK Junior Rallycross Championship saw heartbreak for Latvian ace Roberts Vitols as he set the pace in the qualifying before then leading a majority of the final. Bad luck was to strike however as Vitols ran into technical trouble on the fourth lap, subsequently handing the lead and victory to points leader Luke Constantine.

Dominic Flitney was the winner in the Swift Sport Rallycross Championship whilst David Bell benefitted from a Drew Bellerby retirement to maintain his strong start in the defence of his BMW Mini Rallycross Championship title.

In the RX150 Championship, Stephen Jones claimed a maiden victory when race leaders Tom Onslow Cole and Jon Armstrong came together on the fifth lap and subsequently retired.

Rounding out the list of winners was FIA World Rallycross Championship star Liam Doran, who led the way in the Retro Rallycross Championship. Driving a Ford RS200, Doran was dominant and claimed victory in Retro RX’s Group B & Four Wheel Drive final from the second row of the grid, ahead of Steve Harris.

British Rallycross gearing up for Easter Monday show-stopper at Lydden Hill

The Toyo Tires Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship will descend on Lydden Hill this coming Bank Holiday Monday (April 22) with five-time champion Julian Godfrey looking to build on his strong start to the 2019 season.

In what has become a traditional event over the Easter period at the spiritual home of rallycross, a bumper crowd is expected to turn out in force to witness the latest chapter of what has already been an entertaining campaign of sideways thrills.

Silverstone provided the backdrop for the season-opener last month and Godfrey laid down the gauntlet to his rivals as he claimed a clean sweep of victories across all heats and then the final to charge into the points lead.

Chasing a sixth crown, the multiple champion will be behind the wheel of a former title-winning Ford Fiesta instead of his Spencer Sport-run Mitsubishi Mirage for the second round of the year – adding further intrigue before lights out.

Irish Rallycross champion Derek Tohill made his mark at Silverstone with a string of notable performance, ultimately finishing second, and he has confirmed he will race in his Ford Fiesta too. If the cards fall his way, Tohill could well be the man to take the fight to Godfrey over the course of the day.

Jake Harris will make his first start of the year in a Citroen DS3 whilst Pat Doran will also fly flag for the French marque in his trusty Citroen C4, and the former champion will have his sights set on building on his podium start to the year.

Roger Thomas and Andy Grant are set for maiden outings in a Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus respectively whilst rounding out the front-running contenders are Steve Hill, Steve Mundy, Mike Manning and Liam Manning.

Alongside the Supercar class of the Toyo Tires Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship, an all-out action supporting cast will also keep fans on the edge-of-their-seats.

Tristan Ovenden is the early pace-setter in the Motorsport UK Supernational Championship and he heads a list of quick local drivers in the two-wheel-drive category including Paul Coney, Darren Scott and Fred Ling.

In the Motorsport UK Junior Rallycross Championship, Luke Constantine leads the way however he will have to be wary of the threat from Tom Constantine and others if he wants to stay there come the end of race day.

Elsewhere the Swift Sport Rallycross Championship, BMW Mini Rallycross Championship, Retro Rallycross Championship and RX150 Championship will all be in action too.

To ensure you don’t miss a second of the racing on Easter Monday, head to the official event page here.

Julian Godfrey dominates BRX season-opener at Silverstone

The Toyo Tires Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship roared into life this past Sunday (March 24) at Silverstone with five-time champion Julian Godfrey setting his stall out as the man to beat, dominating proceedings to take victory.

Having narrowly missed out on capturing a sixth crown to Mark Higgins last year, Godfrey proved to be a tour-de-force behind the wheel of his Spencer Sport-run Mitsubishi Mirage.

With both Ollie O’Donovan and Oliver Bennett both early retirements during the meeting, the baton feel to Irish Rallycross champion Derek Tohill and former title winner Pat Doran to displace Godfrey at the summit of the times.

Taking a clean sweep across all three qualification races, Godfrey’s unstoppable charge continued in the final as he showed his rivals a clean set of heels, ultimately pipping Tohill by more than two seconds – Doran ultimately rounded out the podium.

Behind the top three; Steve Hill, Mike Manning and Steve Mundy capped off the list of finishers to bring a close on a pulsating opening event for the Supercar category.

In the Motorsport UK Junior Rallycross Championship, Luke Constantine kicked his 2019 campaign off on the right foot with a clinical performance to take victory ahead of Patrick O’Donovan and Roberts Vitols.

The Motorsport UK Supernational Rallycross Championship had a familiar feel to it as former champion Tristan Ovenden underlined why he is still the man to beat with a flawless drive to take the chequered flag in the final. At the wheel of his Renault Clio V6, Ovenden reigned supreme as he led Jack Thorne and Peter McGarry around the Northamptonshire-based venue.

David Bell, another series veteran, savoured success at Silverstone too as he clinched honours in the BMW MINI Rallycross Championship whilst Dominic Flitney did the same in the Swift Sport Rallycross Championship.

Capping off the list of winners from the opening round of the season was Steve Harris and Brett Harris, who won the OBP Motorsport Retro Rallycross Championship and RX150 Championship respectively.
