Porsche Carrera Cup GB gears up for 20th anniversary season

The Porsche Carrera Cup GB is set to embark on a milestone season this year with the fastest single-marque GT championship in the UK celebrating its 20th anniversary by introducing a brand new car.

Having been at the forefront of one-make competition both nationally and internationally for two decades, the ultra-competitive series is set to usher in a new era in 2022 as it takes centre stage on the British Touring Car Championship support bill.

Going from strength to strength in recent years, the championship is set to scale new heights with the arrival of the sensational ‘Type 992’ 911 GT3 Cup – which made an appearance during testing at Thruxton last year.

Powered by an evolved 4.0-litre six-cylinder boxer engine producing 510 hp and 470 Nm torque, the car features a six-speed sequential gearbox which, for the first time, uses a paddleshift with an electronic actuator for faster, seamless gear shifts.

Providing a springboard for the careers such as former champions Dan Harper, Harry King, Charlie Eastwood and Dan Cammish, the championship is undoubtedly set to add another name to the aforementioned list in 2022.

With the likes of Redline Racing, JTR, Team Parker Racing and Richardson Racing, amongst several others, the battle for supremacy at the front of the field is set to be as competitive as ever.

Notable names to look out for over the course of the season include 2021 race winners Kiern Jewiss and Will Martin, Porsche GB Junior victory Adam Smalley, GT ace Seb Morris, Sprint Challenge GB champion Theo Edgerton and British GT title holder Gus Burton – to name but a few.

The 20th season of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB gets underway at Donington Park on April 23/24.

Adam Smalley named as 2022/2023 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Junior driver

Newly-crowned Millers Oils Ginetta GT4 Supercup champion Adam Smalley has been named as the 2022/2023 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Junior driver.

The 20-year-old, who stormed to the Ginetta crown in his second season in the series, impressed during a closely-fought shootout day in early November to net what is widely considered to be one of the most coveted prizes in UK motorsport.

Over 50 drivers initially applied for the Junior prize before the competition was whittled down to four; Smalley, Gus Burton, Theo Edgerton and Alex Walker.

Smalley, who succeeds 2020 Porsche Carrera Cup GB champion Harry King, will benefit from £85,000 towards his budget in each of the next two Porsche Carrera Cup GB seasons as well as receiving a wealth of support and opportunities from Porsche.

James MacNaughton, Porsche GB Motorsport Manager, said: “The Junior programme is incredibly important to us, it is one of UK motorsport’s most coveted opportunities. Over 50 hopeful applicants sent their forms to us this year and that’s where our scrutiny started. We managed to whittle our shortlist down to 12 for the interview stage and, from there, selected four drivers to take part in our shootout event.

“All four drivers put in very impressive and determined performances on the day, proving to us that they really wanted to be the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Junior for the next two years. Our decision process was as difficult as always, but Adam emerged ahead. However, we’re certain that Gus, Theo and Alex are all capable of impressing in Porsche Carrera Cup GB and we hope they join the grid in future.

“The Porsche Carrera Cup GB Junior role has become a proven route to motor racing success on the international stage, I am confident that Adam will thrive as he sets out to replicate the success of his Porsche peers and to act as a Porsche GB ambassador. We’re certainly excited to help enhance Adam’s already exceptional skills both on and off the track during the next two years.”

Blockbuster thrills and spills ran right the way through the TOCA support package this past weekend (July 31/August 1) as five championships resumed their 2021 campaigns at Oulton Park.

On what proved to be an action-packed two days where red flag stoppages proved to be a regular occurrence, the bumper crowd that attended the Cheshire venue were treated to plenty of entertaining wheel-to-wheel battles.

The Michelin Ginetta Junior Championship ultimately raced just once due to delays to the timetable on Sunday. Following a lengthy stoppage of their own due to barrier repairs, the one-make series staged a frenetic four-lap dash to the flag.

Liam McNeilly produced a superlative performance to narrowly clinch victory ahead of josh Miller and Aston Millar, and with it, moved to the summit of the points standings. The second race scheduled to take place will now be run at Knockhill later this month.
