Classic Touring Cars headline tin top festival at Croft

The British Automobile Racing Club packed in an abundance of wheel-to-wheel entertainment across two days at Croft this past weekend (August 12/13) as the Classic Touring Car Racing Club took centre stage in North Yorkshire. 

Two weeks on from the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship’s annual visit to the 2.10-mile circuit, tin tops from a variety of eras had those in attendance on the edge of their seats as they wrote the latest chapter of what has already been an action-packed season.

Headlining proceedings were two races from the amalgamated Laser Tools Super Tourers, Burty Haulage Pre ’03 Touring Cars and Laser Tools Pre ’93 Touring Cars; which showcased machines that are often revered fondly amongst BTCC folklore.

Stewart Whyte piloted his ex-Tom Kristensen 2000 Honda Accord to victory ahead of Jason Hughes in the weekend’s opening contest and the experienced racer then doubled his account on Sunday, heading Ian Bower in race two.

The Poultec Pre ’66 Touring Cars and Orange Aero Pre ’83 Touring Cars saw William Davison take a clean sweep of wins whilst Bower and Nick Vaughan triumphed in the Edmundson Electrical Classic Thunder and Burton Power Blue Oval Saloon Series bouts.

Concluding the Classic Touring Car Racing Club action were two races from the Berkshire Jag Components Jaguar Challenge, which were won by Colin Philpott.

Elsewhere, the Junior Saloon Car Championship maintained the theme of high-speed thrills and spills with two blockbuster races that will undoubtedly play a critical role in deciding who is crowned champion come the end of the season. 

Arriving at Croft in the pound seat at the top of the standings, Daire Flock was wheel-perfect in race one as he converted pole position into a comfortable lights-to-flag victory ahead of Jack James and Jonathan Moore.

Race two for the 14 to 17-year-old one-make series saw a carbon copy result as Flock once again resisted the race-long advances of James to claim victory and crucially, take a massive step towards being crowned champion.

Concluding the weekend’s on-track entertainment were no less than six pulsating races from the Morphmy Caterham Graduates Championship. 

Ben Wheatley and Richard Groom enjoyed a share of the spoils in the trio of Sigma 135 contests whilst Will Stilwell blasted his way to an impressive hat-trick of race wins in the combined Sigma 150 and Sigmax bouts.

Croft set to step back in time for Classic Touring Car Festival

Croft Circuit will welcome some iconic racing cars from the past when it takes a step back in time to host the Classic Touring Car Festival featuring Super Tourers next weekend (12/13 August).

The North Yorkshire track will celebrate one of the most fondly remembered eras of saloon car racing when the two-day British Automobile Racing Club meeting arrives as the Super Touring Cars of the 1990s will roar into action with two races.

Spectators will be able to enjoy a blast from the past when cars including Honda Accords, Vauxhall Cavaliers and Renault Lagunas amongst other classic machines take to the tarmac at Croft. They will be joined on the starting grid by other pre-2003 models and will have their qualifying session on Saturday morning before racing at 4.30pm and again on Sunday at 3.45pm.

There is a full programme of Classic Touring Car Championships competing over the weekend with pre-66, pre-83, pre-93 classes also set to go head-to-head. The pre-66 category includes the likes of Austin Mini Coopers and Hillman Imps whilst the pre-83 class features Ford Escort Mk1s and MG Metros.

The pre-93 championship is open to four-seater saloon cars produced before 1st January 1993 such as the BMW E36 M3 and Vauxhall Astras and line-up on the grid alongside competitors from the Blue Oval Saloon Series exclusively for Fords on sale before 1st January 2013 including the Fiesta, Escort and Anglia.

The Caterham Graduates will also be in action as will the Junior Saloon Car Championship, featuring up and coming drivers aged between 14 and 17 behind the wheels of Citroen Saxos.

The Classic Thunder series will be battling for the honours which sees competitors participating in saloon, coupe, hatchback, and estate cars as well as the pre-83 Historic Thunder Saloon Cars, Notable machines will include the Ford Falcon, Mazda RX8, BMW E46 M3, Toyota Starlet and Aston Martin V8 Vantage.

Jaguar fans will be able to get their fix with the Jaguar Challenge going wheel to wheel in two races.Saloon and GT cars from the 1960s, such as the XK engine, to Millennium models such as the S Type and XK8 feature in the series across five classes.

There will also be touring car displays throughout the weekend, whilst on Saturday racing starts at 9.30am with qualifying followed by eight races starting at 13.50. Sunday’s action gets underway at 12.00 noon with a further ten races during the afternoon.

Super Touring Power 2 confirmed at Brands Hatch for 2024

Brands Hatch and the Classic Touring Car Racing Club have confirmed that Super Touring Power, which debuted at the Kent circuit in early July this year, will return for a second edition in 2024 on June 29/30.

The new event, which transported fans back to a golden era of the British Touring Car Championship, looks set to build on this year’s success with another bumper programme of racing set to be complemented by a selection of special displays, demonstrations and guest appearances.

Competitive action will again be primarily curated by the Classic Touring Car Racing Club and the British Automobile Racing Club – which played a pivotal role behind the scenes of the 2023 edition – and will take place across both the longer Grand Prix and more compact Indy circuit layouts.

Whilst Super Touring machinery will form a focal point of the two-day meeting, Super Touring Power 2 is set to see a much broader celebration of touring car history with a new highlight for next summer being a planned Group A race for the likes of Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500s and BMW M3 E30s.

“The response from the CTCRC drivers has been phenomenal,” said Stuart Caie, Classic Touring Car Racing Club Chairman. “None of us could ever have expected how well the event would be received by the fans.

“I am sure a lot of you have seen on social media people asking for it to happen again and of course once Autosport published the ‘super idea too good not to be repeated’ article, so how could we not?

“In 2024 we will add a Group A race as we feel the crowd would like nothing more than to see the fire breathing RS500s and BMWs fighting it out on the GP circuit as they did in period!”

Super Touring Power serves up weekend to remember at Brands Hatch

Fans of the British Touring Car Championship were taken on a trip down memory lane this past weekend (July 1/2) as Brands Hatch blasted back to the 90s to celebrate one of the series’ most fondly remembered eras at Super Touring Power.

The two-day event, which was running for the first-ever time, transported those in attendance at the Kent venue to a much-loved period of national saloon car competition, with races, demonstrations and displays.

One of the many highlights across the weekend were the blockbuster races from the Classic Touring Car Racing Club, in particular the quartet from the Laser Tools Super Tourers which featured a strong field of 20 cars.

Included on the entry list were legendary Super Touring stars such as Paul Radisich (Ford Mondeo), Anthony Reid (Nissan Primera), Greg Murphy (Nissan Primera) and Steven Richards (Volvo S40) however, none of them could stop current BTCC star Jake Hill who claimed a clean sweep of victories at the wheel of an ex-Laurent Aiello Nissan Primera. 

Hill was wheel-perfect as he led home the ex-Tom Kristensen Honda Accord of Stewart Whyte in the first three races before then reigning supreme ahead of former BTCC driver Jason Hughes and his Vauxhall Vectra in the finale. 

In addition to the nostalgic racing, the weekend also saw demonstration runs which included the iconic 1997 Williams Renault Laguna of Alain Menu, who was in attendance as a guest, Steve Soper in a Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 and Ash Sutton in his 2023 Ford Focus ST – to name but a few.

Around the venue, cars such as Rickard Rydell’s 1998 title-winning Volvo S40 and Joachim Winkelhock’s BMW, amongst many others, were on display for all to see with stars such as Menu, Radisich, Andy Rouse, Tim Harvey and Patrick Watts also featuring on the Autosport Interview Stage. 

Elsewhere, bumper grids featured throughout the remaining Classic Touring Car Racing Club categories shared the spotlight in front of the huge crowds that had flocked trackside to soak up the vintage tin top action, starting on the Grand Prix layout on Saturday.

Charles Rainford – who can usually be found competing in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB – swapped his 911 for a Ford Capri and didn’t put a wheel wrong as he won two highly entertaining Poutltec Pre-66 Touring Cars and Orange Aero Pre-83 Touring Cars races.

More than 40 cars went bumper-to-bumper in a pair of entertaining amalgamated Laser Tools Pre-93 Touring Cars, Burty Haulage Pre-03 Touring Cars and Burton Power Blue Oval Saloon Series races, with Paul Mensley and Martin Reynolds claiming a win apiece.

Samuel Wilson and Alex Sidwell rounded out the list of winners on the legendary 2.433-mile circuit as they each made it onto the top step of the podium in the Edmundson Electrical Classic Thunder and Berkshire Jag Components Jaguar Challenge races.

Switching to the more compact Indy circuit on Sunday, Grant Williams narrowly held off Ian Curley to claim a brace of Pre-66 race wins whilst Stuart Waite emerged as the driver to beat in the merged Pre-83 and Pre-93 contests.

Mensley and Reynolds continued to be the cream of the crop in the combined Pre-03 and Blue Oval Saloon Series bouts, with Mensley charging to a double triumph whilst Wilson and Nick Vaughan shared the spoils in the Classic Thunder and Jaguar Challenge races.

Classic Touring Car Racing Club headlines scorching Castle Combe Summer Spectacular

The Classic Touring Car Racing Club continued its full-throttle 2023 season last weekend (June 10/11) as it took centre stage at Castle Combe for the venue’s annual Summer Spectacular race meeting.

On what proved to be a sun-kissed weekend at the Wiltshire circuit, a trio of British Automobile Racing Club categories turned up the heat on-track as they delivered a feast of edge-of-the-seat thrills and spills for the bumper crowd in attendance.

Hot on the heels of producing captivating events at Silverstone and Brands Hatch, iconic tin tops from the Classic Touring Car Racing Club were back in action with a total of eight blockbuster encounters. 

In the amalgamated Poultec Pre-66 Touring Cars and Orange Aero Pre-83 Group 1 Touring Cars bouts, spoils were shared between William Davison and Stephen Primett, who each claimed a win apiece. 

Elsewhere, Stuart Waite and Mike Manning reigned supreme in the combined Laser Tools Pre-93 Touring Cars, Burty Haulage Pre-03 Touring Cars and Burton Power Blue Oval Saloon Series races whilst Guy Connew and Tom Lenthall triumphed in the Berkshire Jag Component Jaguar Challenge.

Concluding the CTCRC action were a pair of races from the Edmunson Electrical Classic Thunder Saloons, both of which were won by Jason West in his BMW M3 E46 – albeit by slender margins. 

That wasn’t to be the only success that West enjoyed either as he added a further two wins to his weekend tally in the Kumho BMW Championship. 

The Lancaster Insurance MG Owners Club Championship also continued its 2023 season with two entertaining races and reigning champion Steve McDermid stamping his authority on proceedings by charging to a brace of victories.

At the wheel of his MG ZR, McDermid led home Mark Willis and Lee Sullivan in both encounters whilst his main title protagonist Scott Bugner endured a weekend to forget as he recorded two non-finishes.

Britcar Endurance and CTCRC star during blockbuster Brands Hatch weekend

The British Automobile Racing Club made an action-packed return to Brands Hatch this past weekend (April 22/23) with the British Endurance Championship, Britcar Trophy and Classic Touring Car Racing Club serving up an unmissable show.

Less than a month on from them lifting the curtain on the 2023 campaign at Silverstone, the trio of categories provided big entertainment for the both the fans that flocked trackside and those that were watching via the Club’s ever-popular live stream.

Saturday afternoon’s headline act saw the British Endurance Championship take centre stage for a pulsating two-hour contest; where the PB Racing duo of Peter Erceg and Marcus Clutton charged to a dominant victory in their Audi R8 GT3.

After pipping the Aston Martin Vulcan of Glebs Stepanovs and Stephen Tompkins to pole position in qualifying, many expected the two teams to battle it out for victory however it quickly became apparent that that wasn’t going to be the case.

Upon approach to Clearways on the opening lap, the Aston Martin speared left into the barriers, ending its race on the spot. From there, Erceg and Clutton controlled proceedings out front – lapping the entire field six times – to clinch a memorable victory.

Behind, the Team HARD Porsche 991 Cup car of Brad Thurston and Daryl DeLeon claimed second whilst Chris Jones and Matt George guided their Mercedes GT4 to the third step on the podium. 

The Classic Touring Car Racing Club delivered an abundance of thrills and spills as its rosters of championships produced no less than 10 races over the course of both days.

In the Poultec Pre ’66 Touring Cars, less than one second covered the top three in a captivating opening contest that saw Michael Sheraton triumph in his Ford Anglia ahead of the Ford Lotus Cortina duo of Timothy Abbott and Ian Thompson.

James Ibbotson – who went viral online last year for drifting his Hillman Imp down the Craner Curves – put on a commanding display in the weekend’s second race to guide his way to the rostrum summit.

Over in the Orange Aero Pre ’83 Touring Cars, Mark Cholerton took advantage of a start-line mechanical issue for Stephen Primett to take victory in race one before Primett bounced back and came to the fore in Sunday’s second bout to claim a win of his own.

Elsewhere, the amalgamated Laser Tools Pre ’93 Touring Cars, Burty Haulage Pre ’03 Touring Cars and Burton Power Blue Oval Saloon Series races saw Stuart Waite and James Dunkley take an overall victory apiece.

Concluding the CTCRC action were two races from the Edmundson Electrical Classic Thunder and two from the Berkshire Jag Components Jaguar Challenge. In the Classic Thunder, Bryan Bransom claimed the spoils whilst Colin Philpott starred in the Jaguar Challenge.

Rounding out the weekend was an enthralling two-hour race courtesy of the Britcar Trophy Championship. Off the back of an impressive performance at Silverstone last month, Datum Motorsport’s Axel van Nederveen continued his scintillating form by taking his Ginetta G56 GTA to victory lane.

Finishing a full lap clear of his closest opposition, van Nederveen led home Simon Clark in his Porsche 997 Carrera S and SVG Motorsport duo of Neil Wallace and Ian Astley.

BARC lifts the curtain on 2023 season in spectacular style at Silverstone

The British Automobile Racing Club lifted the curtain on its 2023 season in spectacular style this past weekend (March 25/26) as a bumper entry served up a feast of entertainment around Silverstone’s world-famous Grand Prix circuit.

Following months of preparation, anticipation and excitement; all eyes were on the Home of British Motor Racing as some of the Club’s biggest categories took centre stage to set the tone for the year ahead with two days of enthralling wheel-to-wheel action.

Embarking on its sophomore season, the British Endurance Championship garnered plenty of interest as it showcased a monstrous array of GT machines in a captivating three-hour encounter on Saturday afternoon. 

With a revised class structure which featured some regular faces, old favourites in new cars and a host of exciting newcomers, battles raged throughout the field however up at the front there was nobody that could stop the Blackthorn-entered Mercedes GT3. 

After missing out on pole position by a tenth of a second in qualifying, Claude Bovet and David McDonald proved to be too much for the opposition as they comfortably romped to victory – finishing more than a minute ahead of the Audi GT3 pairing of Peter Erceg and Marcus Clutton who finished in second place.

The Britcar Trophy Championship burst into life on Sunday with two frenetic 50-minute contests and a near 30-car field.

Race one proved to be a somewhat dominant affair as Datum Motorsport’s Axel Van Nederveen guided his Ginetta G56 GTA to a commanding victory ahead of William Stacey and Maurizio Sciglio however things seemed to be somewhat closer in the day’s second bout later in the day as Van Nederveen claimed a clean sweep.

High in confidence after his earlier win, the Dutchman could do nothing to stop the Intersport Racing duo of Jas Sapra and Bryan Bransom from triumphing on-track in their BMW M3 E46 however a post-race exclusion ultimately promoted him from second to the top step of the podium.

Spoils were shared in the inaugural Britcar Prototype Cup – launched to bring together all types of prototype machinery to compete on one single grid – which consisted of two 25-minute races and a 50-minute finale.

Idola Motorsport’s Rodolfo Gonzalez wrote his name into the history books as the series’ first-ever winner before the University of Wolverhampton’s Shane Kelly struck back with a win of his own in race two.

Making it three different winners from three races was the TGM with Private Leads team of Ben Stone and Teddy Wilson who capped off a dream debut with an assured performance during the weekend’s closing bout.

Iconic tin top machines from the Classic Touring Car Racing Club had fans on the edge of their seats over the course of the weekend too as they delivered no less than eight blockbuster races.

The amalgamated Poutec Pre ’66 Touring Cars and Orange Aero Pre ’83 Touring Cars contests had a familiar feel to them with both podiums being occupied by the same three drivers; with Stephen Primett claiming a brace of victories ahead of Jonathan Corker and William Davidson. Further down the pack, Peter Hallford piloted his Ford Mustang to emerge as the top Pre ’66 runner.

Nobody could stop Stuart Waite in the combined Laser Tools Pre ’93 Touring Cars, Burty Haulage Pre ’03 Touring Cars and Laser Tools Super Tourer races as he charged to a pair of impressive victories in his BMW E36 M3.

Hot on his heels was Garry Prebble – the top Pre ’03 entrant – and James Everard who each claimed a second and third place finish respectively whilst Jason Hughes triumphed in the Super Tourers category in an ex-Jason Plato Vauxhall Vectra.

Rounding out the weekend’s track action at Silverstone were two races from the Edmundson Electrical Classic Thunder, Burton Power Blue Oval Saloon Series and Berkshire Jag Components Jaguar Challenge.

Boasting a grid of more than 40 flame-spitting machines, Jason West scored two more victories for the BMW E36 M3 as he led home Bryan Bransom and Sam Wilson all the way to the chequered flag.

BARC concludes 2022 season with action-packed weekend at Brands Hatch

The British Automobile Racing Club brought the curtain down on its 2022 season in style at Brands Hatch this past weekend (November 12/13) with an action-packed 15 races serving up a feast of entertainment. 

Concluding what has been a year to remember for the Club’s championships, series, centres and venues; two days of full-throttle thrills and spills around the famous Kent circuit – as well as a poignant moment of Remembrance – proved to be a fitting finale.

In the Junior Saloon Car Championship, Maximus Hall completed a late-season turnaround to be crowned champion. Closing the gap to long-time points leader Harry Hickton during the second half of the season, Hall arrived at the Indy layout within touching distance of the standings summit.

With double points on offer across all three of the weekend’s races, Hall – who has been the series’ standout rookie driver – didn’t put a wheel wrong as he charged to victory in races one and two, which moved him into the lead of the championship.

Holding a 36-point advantage heading into the final race of the season, Hall was perfection personified as he completed a clean sweep of victories and with it, capped off a sensational maiden campaign to clinch the title in the one-make category. 

Freddie Slater wrapped up the 2022 Michelin Ginetta Junior Winter Series in association with ATL Ltd title with a dominant display, scoring a hat-trick of wins. The R Racing driver entered the weekend as one of the favourites for the crown and he duly lived up to the hype.

Sharing the spoils with Luke Watts on Saturday, Slater – who finished 15th overall in the main championship this year – was in a league of his own on Sunday as he cantered to a brace of wins to capture the big prize. 

Having crowned its champions at Donington Park late last month, the Classic Touring Car Racing Club enjoyed one final blast with a memorable 40-minute all comers race which was ultimately won at a canter by Anton Martin, who finished more than two laps clear of his nearest rival.

One of the undoubted highlights of the weekend was set to be the inaugural 110-minute endurance race, which celebrated 110 Years of the BARC. Open to closed-wheel production cars, a bumper entry list put on a show before thick fog unfortunately brought play to a close early on Sunday.

At the time of the stoppage – which came just 30 minutes into the bout – the BMW duo of Bryan Bransom and Kevin Clarke held an advantage of almost five seconds ahead of pole sitters Lucky Khera and Jasver Sapra. 

Bragging rights in the Carbon8 Hyundai Coupe Cup with Toyo Tires this year went the way of Wayne Rockett after he scored a pivotal victory in the penultimate race of the season. 

Tied with Adam Jones on four wins apiece prior to the weekend, Rockett went from third on the grid to the top step of the podium in the opening encounter to secure overall honours. In the series finale, Jones came oh-so close to winning as he trailed Mark Ridout by little under half a second.

Rounding out the weekend’s track action was four ultra-competitive races from the Classic & Modern Motorsport Club Southern. In the Avon Tyres Intermarque Silhouette Series, Lewis Smith emerged as the driver to beat as he charged to pole position and two flawless wins. 

The combined Super Saloon Series & Southern Tin Top Series contests meanwhile saw Michael Eustace guide his BMW E46 M3 to a brace of victories ahead of consistent front-runner Rod Birley, who was behind the wheel of his Ford Escort WRC.

Champions crowned in contrasting conditions at Donington Park

Champions were crowned in contrasting conditions this past weekend (October 22/23) as the British Automobile Racing Club took centre stage at Donington Park. 

On what proved to be an action-packed title decider under the flightpath of East Midlands airport, five championships put on a feast of entertainment for those in attendance in both wet and dry conditions. 

The British Endurance Championship concluded its inaugural season in dramatic fashion, with the destiny of the title being decided in the final few laps of what was a captivating two-hour contest.

After a frenetic start – which saw the safety car make three appearances in the opening 15 minutes – the finale of what has been a year to remember soon settled down, with a number of different teams hitting the front. 

Heading into the final half hour, title contenders Wayne Marrs and Tom Jackson put their Rob Boston Racing Mercedes GT3 to within touching distance of the crown as they assumed a lead they would ultimately never lose.

Needing to overturn a slender two-point deficit, Marrs and Jackson did all they could do up front and behind, things were soon set to fall their way to ensure they wrote their name in the history books as not only race winners but champions. 

On course for victory in Class C and the overall title, a small mistake by the RNR Performance Ferrari 458 Challenge – driven by Chris Goddard, Charlie Hollings and Jamie Stanley – in the closing stages ensured victory for the Mercedes pair.

Team BRIT wrote the latest feel-good chapter in their ever-growing story by clinching the overall title in the Britcar Trophy. Heading into the final round of the year holding a narrow advantage in the points, Chris Overend and James Whitley did enough to guide their BMW M240i to championship glory.

Whilst many eyes were transfixed on the battle for title supremacy, Rob Boston Racing took a clean sweep of endurance wins over the course of the weekend. William Stacey piloted the stunning Lotus Elise to a brace of wins in significantly different conditions, with the first coming in torrential rain and the second just as the sun set on a dry track. 

Jimmy Broadbent and Gordie Mutch wrapped up the Praga Cup title in emphatic fashion, claiming two commanding victories. Arriving at the Leicestershire track firmly in control at the summit of the standings, the Fanatec Team 87 pairing laid down their marker to the rest of the field with a superlative lap in qualifying to clinch pole position. 

From there, Broadbent and Mutch reigned supreme – and in some style too – as they charged to victory in race one, giving them an unassailable lead in the series. With the championship sorted, Sunday’s second bout saw them put the explanation point on a dominant campaign by scoring yet another race win. 

The Classic Touring Car Racing Club produced an abundance of edge-of-the-seat entertainment as expected, with no less than eight races of nostalgic saloon car action playing out around Donington’s Grand Prix layout.

Barry Sime and James Ibbotson scored a win apiece in the Poultec Classic Race Engines Pre-66 Touring Cars contests whilst Colin Philpott and newly crowned Jaguar champion Tom Robinson did the same in the amalgamated Shell Oils Pre 83 Touring Cars and Berkshire Jags Jaguar Challenge races.

Elsewhere, spoils were shared between Andrew Wilson and Kirk Armitage in the Classic & Historic Thunder Saloons/Blue Oval Saloons Series races. Rounding out the tin top fun were two bouts from the combined Laser Tools Pre 93 & Super Tourers and Burty Haulage Pre 03 Touring Cars, where Jason Hughes and Stewart Whyte ran out as the overall winners. 

Matt Hammond ensured that the title fight in the Quaife MINI CHALLENGE Trophy will go down to the wire at Brands Hatch next month after scoring two impressive wins. 

On a weekend that could have seen Nelson King secure an unassailable lead in the standings, the reigning champion dug deep to keep the championship battle rolling on and maintain his faint hopes of securing back-to-back crowns. 

Hammond tip-toed his way round a sodden track to score victory in race one before then adding to his silverware collection in a frenetic finale. In-between those victories, Joe Wiggin came to the fore to score victory in race two.

Where To Watch BARC LIVE: Donington Park – October 22/23

Champions will be crowned at Donington Park this weekend (October 22/23) as the British Automobile Racing Club takes centre stage at the Leicestershire venue for an action-packed two days.

On what promises to be a title deciding spectacle under the flightpath of East Midlands airport, the gloves are set to come off as the battle for supremacy further intensifies.

The British Endurance Championship will conclude its inaugural season with a two-hour contest whilst both the Britcar Trophy Championship and Praga Cup will also look to sign off their campaigns in style.

Thrills and spills will undoubtedly be served up by the Classic Touring Car Racing Club, with the MINI CHALLENGE Trophy also joining the bill for the penultimate event of their season.

BARC championships delivers spectacular Snetterton show

The British Automobile Racing Club produced a blockbuster two days of wheel-to-wheel entertainment at Snetterton this past weekend (September 17/18), with six different categories writing the latest chapter in their 2022 campaigns.

On what proved to be a weekend to remember on the 300 layout of the Norfolk venue, a bumper crowd flocked trackside to witness a sensational 26-race programme where the battle for supremacy had everyone on the edge of their seats. 

Whilst the on-track action took centre stage, the event also saw competitors, officials and spectators come together to pay their respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on September 8. 

Two minute silences were impeccably observed across both Saturday and Sunday, with all competing cars and trucks running tributes as well as officials and marshals wearing black armbands. 

There were twists and turns in the British Truck Racing Championship as the fight to be crowned champion intensified, with five colossal contests marking the start of the title run-in.

Division 1 saw Stuart Oliver make serious inroads towards the summit of the standings as he claimed a hat-trick of wins. Bouncing back from a heavy crash at Donington Park, the Volvo VNL driver dominated races one and two before then charging to victory in race five.

Championship leader Ryan Smith endured a rollercoaster weekend as he took to the track in a brand-new truck, having only had six days to build and prepare it; victory in race four would be his reward before he non-scored in the final bout. The remaining race fell the way of Richard Collett, who scored a popular first win of the season.

In Division 2, Luke Garrett endured his own mechanical dramas but still managed to score a pair of wins whilst Brad Smith, John Bowler and Jock Borthwick also visited the top step of the podium.

Miles Rudman and Will Gibson were the big winners in the Legends Cars National Championship as they each triumphed twice. Gibson was the driver to beat on Saturday before series leader Rudman came to the fore the following day – with the second of his two wins being his 50th in the one-make series. 

Matthew Isherwood chalked up his second-ever victory in Saturday’s final whilst Sunday’s finale fell the way of multiple champion John Mickel, who used all of his experience to pip Gibson on the run to the chequered flag. 

Variety was the spice of life when it came to the Classic Touring Car Racing Club as some of the most iconic tin tops from down the years took centre stage across eight unmissable races.

James Ibbotson claimed a dominant double in the Poultec Race Engines Pre 66 Touring Cars, with Stephen Primett repeating the feat in the Shell Oils Pre 83 Touring Cars. James Everard and Robert Crisell meanwhile shared the spoils in the amalgamated Laser Tools Pre 93 and Burty Haulage Pre 03 Touring Car bouts. 

In the combined Edmundson Electrical Classic & Historic Thunder, Burton Power Blue Oval Saloons Series and Berkshire Jags Jaguar Challenge races, Jason Davies was imperious as he guided his Ford Sierra Cosworth to two impressive victories. 

Nelson King closed in on securing the Quaife MINI CHALLENGE Trophy crown as he scored his ninth win of the season. The Graves Motorsport driver edged out Nicky Taylor to take a step closer to the title; wins also went the way of Tristen Ovenden and Charlie Mann. 

Steve McDermid was perfection personified in the Lancaster Insurance MG Owners Club Championship as he added two more wins to his impressive 2022 tally. The MG ZR racer led home Jack Woodcock in two action-packed races – the second of which ended prematurely – to move closer to retaining his title. 

Bringing the curtain down on the weekend were two enthralling contests from the Pickup Truck Racing Championship. On what was a pivotal outing for the series, Dale Gent charged to victory in race one before Reece Jones reigned supreme in a pulsating race two, edging out points leader George Turiccki.
