Classic Touring Car Racing Club: Shell Oils Group 1 Pre-83 Touring Car Championship

The Group One era of Touring Car racing is alive and well in Britain and the Classic Touring Car Club and British Automobile Racing Club prepare for a season of exciting tin-top action in the Group One Pre-83 Touring Car Championship which begins at Donington Park later this month.

Saloon car racing has always been a popular spectacle on British race circuits, and no matter the era or generation – everyone had their favourite drivers and favourite cars! For cars from the seventies and eighties – this championship is home to plenty of motoring icons. Cars eligible must have been marketed to the public before 1st January 1983 – with more than 5000 examples manufactured in any 12 month period during the overall production run and/or were homologated by the FIA for competition in Group One category for production cars prior to that date.

Popular machines from a bygone era are raced hard once more rather than placed in museums, with popular classics such as the Ford Escort Mk1, MG Metro, Triumph Dolomite Sprint and Chevrolet Camaro, and more battling hard on the race track.

Donington Park flags off the proceedings in Leicestershire before embarking on a UK tour. Pembrey, Silverstone and Snetterton are woven together by four rounds at Brands Hatch, with three on the Indy circuit and one utilising the legendary GP loop.

Family, friends and motorsport fans will be able to watch all the action from the BARC race weekends LIVE on our YouTube channel – with a comprehensive day of racing coverage planned: www.youtube.com/@britishautomobileracingclub

The 2025 season for the British Automobile Racing Club gets underway at Donington Park on the 22/23 March, with the Group One brigade joining the opening billing.
