British Truck Racing Championship stars on BBC Top Gear

The British Truck Racing Championship took on a starring role in the latest episode of BBC’s hit show Top Gear this past Sunday (June 19) as a number of drivers went wheel-to-wheel with presenters Paddy McGuiness, Freddie Flintoff and Chris Harris.

Episode 3 of the current series saw Paddy, Freddie and Chris attempt to qualify as lorry drivers before embarking on a stormy HGV road trip across Britain – which ultimately culminated at Pembrey Circuit.

Arriving at the home of Welsh motorsport after battling Storm Eunice, the trio joined the stars of the BTRC for an epic race with Paddy getting behind the wheel of Michael Oliver’s MAN Truck, Freddie in Steven Powell’s MAN TGS and Chris in Tom O’Rourke’s MAN TGS. 

Lining up alongside the likes of David Jenkins, John Newell, Adam Bint, Mark Taylor and Craig Reid, along with many more, all three presenters got the full truck racing experience as they battled for outright honours in some style – however you’ll have to watch the episode to see who emerged victorious.

Speaking on the experience of being part of BBC’s hit television show, multiple champion Oliver said: “To play a major part in the planning and preparation ahead of the various filming days and then to work with the presenters and film crew during the production was a great and unforgettable experience.

“Having the opportunity to showcase what the British Truck Racing Championship is all about is fantastic too. Hopefully the success of being on the show will see more fans flock trackside and also see more people wanting to get involved in the sport on the whole.”

Tom Ingram and Stephen Jelley score BTCC wins at Oulton Park

Tom Ingram and Stephen Jelley shared the spoils on what was an action-packed weekend (June 11/12) in the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park. 

Ingram was perfection personified as he scored victory in races one and two before Jelley came to the fore in a blockbuster reverse grid contest around the Cheshire venue; however it is Josh Cook that remains at the top of the points. 

One of the most exciting qualifying sessions of the season built towards a breathtaking climax on Saturday, as a number of the BTCC’s big hitters battled for the right to start at the head of the field the following day. 

Despite there being a brief red flag stoppage, nobody could stop Ingram from claiming pole position. At the wheel of his Hyundai i30N, the Bristol Street Motors with EXCELR8 TradePriceCars.com driver set a best time of 1:25.468 to not only claim top spot but also set a brand new lap record around the 2.22-mile circuit. 

Rory Butcher emerged as the closest challenger to Ingram as he guided his Toyota Corolla to the outside of the front row, whilst Dan Lloyd, Adam Morgan and Ash Sutton rounded out the top five. 

Despite being one of the most successful drivers on the grid, Ingram had never previously scored a podium at Oulton Park; that was until Sunday’s first race where he broke his duck in style.

Defending his lead off the line and through turn one, Ingram soon pulled clear of the chasing pack to score a commanding victory. Behind, Sutton produced a string of sensational overtakes to claim second, with Butcher following him to round out the podium. 

Ingram doubled his win tally for the day as he produced a carbon copy drive in race two. Holding the lead as the lights went out, the Hyundai ace didn’t put a wheel wrong as he chalked up his third win of the year ahead of the ever-consistent Sutton, who finished in second once again.

The battle for the final step on the podium had plenty on the edge of their seats with Butcher initially fending off the charging Colin Turkington. As the laps ticked by, the WSR driver ramped up the pressure on the Scotsman and finally took third at mid-distance.

Team BMW’s Stephen Jelley then scored his first win of the season in an action-packed reverse grid race, delivering a measured drive whilst it all kicked off behind him.

Contact between Lloyd and Ricky Collard sent the former spinning on the run towards Hislops and when he re-entered the track he was collected by Turkington, with a number of others including Ingram and Sutton getting caught up in the incident. Thankfully both Lloyd and Turkington walked away from the incident without injury, just soreness and bruising. 

After a number of laps behind the safety car the race restarted with Jelley breaking clear of Aiden Moffat and Collard, who had been hit with a five-second time penalty for a false start. Cook would become the main beneficiary of Collard’s demise in the end, inheriting third to maintain his series lead.

Approaching the halfway point in the season, Cook holds a 15-point advantage at the summit of the BTCC Drivers’ Championship whilst he and Rich Energy BTC Racing continue to lead the way in the Independent Drivers’ and Teams’ categories.

Bristol Street Motors with EXCELR8 TradePriceCars.com remain in control of the Teams’ standings, with Motorbase/Ford having now moved into the lead of the Manufacturers’ battle.

Jade Edwards was the winner of the Jack Sears Trophy for the weekend however it is Bobby Thompson that continues to head the standings.

Oulton Park serves up blockbuster action across TOCA support package

Oulton Park provided the backdrop to the latest all-action chapter of what is proving to be an unmissable season for the TOCA support package this past weekend (June 11/12) as five championships served up a feast of entertainment.

Taking centre stage alongside the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship in Cheshire, blockbuster thrills and spills ran throughout each series – keeping the bumper trackside crowd and those watching on ITV and ITV4 on the edge of their seats from start-to-finish. 

The Porsche Carrera Cup GB had its fair share of thrilling moments across its two races, the first of which was marred by a red flag. Fresh off the back of his win at Brands Hatch, Will Martin was the driver to beat in the opener as he held off the charging Adam Smalley and Kiern Jewiss to win.

Matty Graham came to the fore in race two as he claimed a commanding lights-to-flag victory, having started from pole position. 

James Kellett continued his fine start to the Millers Oils Ginetta GT4 Sueprcup season, adding a further two wins to the three he claimed at the Brands Hatch season-opener last month.

After claiming pole position in style, Kellett was untouchable in the opening bout as he scored victory by a staggering 15 seconds. The Rosland Gold Racing by Century Motorsport driver doubled his tally for the weekend with another superlative performance in race two, maintaining his unbeaten streak. 

Kellett’s second win came in astonishing circumstances as a multi-car crash on the run to the chequered flag saw him vault from fourth to first within a matter of metres. Aston Millar and Reece Somerfield – both of whom were involved in the incident – rounded out the podium.

There was plenty of wheel-to-wheel entertainment in the Quaife MINI CHALLENGE JCW as Sam Weller and Jason Lockwood scored a victory apiece. 

Saturday arguably belonged to Weller as the Hybrid Tune racer powered his way to the top of the times in qualifying and then converted it into victory in race one. Lockwood then ,mastered tricky conditions in Sunday’s second race to triumph.

The latest chapter of the ROKiT F4 British Championship certified by FIA had everyone on the edge of their seats as the motorsport stars of tomorrow produced an unmissable lakeside triple-header.

Alex Dunne continued his dominance with a commanding lights-to-flag victory in race one before Daniel Guinchard and Louis Sharp scored their breakthrough first wins in races two and three. 

Bringing the curtain down on the action was a pair of races from the Ginetta GT Academy, which was making its one and only appearance on the BTCC support bill this year. 

Enjoying what is proving to be a hugely successful sophomore year, the one-make series boasted a bumper 28-car grid and provided plenty of close racing as Ravi Ramyead scored victory. 

Ramyead got the jump on pole-sitter Warren as the lights went out for race one and although he was under constant pressure, held on to win. Ramyead then repeated the feat in race two to complete a remarkable weekend.

Thruxton steps back in time for spectacular Historic meeting

Thruxton Circuit rolled back the years this past weekend (June 11/12) as a bumper crowd flocked trackside to savour the annual Historic meeting. 

Now a regular fixture on the UK motorsport calendar having debuted back in 2018 as part of the venues 50th Anniversary celebrations, the two-day spectacle brought legendary machines and racers together for an adrenaline rush like no other. 

One of the headline acts of the weekend was undoubtedly the two-part Jochen Rindt Trophy, which celebrating the best single-seater race cars with up to 2-litre engines from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Race one saw a fascinating head-to-head battle take place between Benn Tilley and Rob Wainwright – with Tilley narrowly pipping him to the chequered flag by less than a second. Wainwright was able to strike back in the second bout however as he claimed victory ahead of Matthew Wright.

Outright honours in the HRDC ‘Classic Alfa Challenge’ went the way of James Wright whilst Jamie Boot guided his TVR Griffiths to the top step of the podium in the HRDC ‘Dunlop Allstars’ for Pre-’66 Sports GT & Touring Cars.

Whilst the latest crop of British Touring Car Championship racers starred up at Oulton Park, those at Thruxton wound back the clock courtesy of the HRDC Jack Sears Trophy. Neil Brown and Richard Dutton proved to be the perfect combination as they teamed up to pilot their Lotus Ford Cortina Mk.1 to the top step of the odium.

Tipped as one to watch in the lead up to the event, Ric Wood and his Nissan Skyline GTR delivered a mighty drive to claim outright honours in the Historic Touring Car Challenge with Tony Dron Trophy.

Pre-61 sportscars took centre stage in the one-hour RAC Woodcote Trophy & Stirling Moss Trophy race – and it didn’t disappoint. Boasting an eclectic mix of iconic machines, Ben Adam emerged as the driver to beat as he guided his Lola Mk1 to victory in commanding fashion.

Rounding out the list of race winners was Pippa Cow and Tom Walker, who scored a win apiece in the Lackford Engineering Midget & Sprite Challenge, Andrew and Max Banks who triumphed in the Sixties Touring Car Challenge with U2TC and the duo of Wrigley and Wainwright, who were the victors of the sole Pre 63 GT & Jaguar Classic Challenge contest. 

Unmissable action also took place in the skies above during the course of the weekend as a new heritage aviation feature paid homage to the venues role in WW2 and its ongoing use as a training facility and home to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Service.

One of the headline attractions was a flypast from the iconic Spitfire from the Battle of Britain whilst the equally jaw-dropping Augusta Bell Sioux and the Westland Scout, amongst many others, were on the ground and available to be viewed up close.

Elsewhere, a record number of car clubs were in attendance and on display for all to see across both days. Leading Land Rover clubs were out in force in particular as they played their part in the Land Rover Legends show, which celebrated the history of the marque in style.

BARC delivers Silverstone spectacle on Platinum Jubilee weekend

The British Automobile Racing Club enjoyed a Platinum Jubilee weekend (June 4/5) to remember as it continued its 2022 season in style at Silverstone.

As much of the UK marked the Queen’s 70 years on the throne with street parties, the BARC  showcased some of its biggest and best championships on the Northamptonshire venues National circuit; and it didn’t disappoint.

Saturday saw the Britcar Trophy take centre stage around the Home of British Motor Racing as it served up two action-packed 50-minute bouts. Boasting a near 30-car grid, the series saw wheel-to-wheel battles run throughout the field however nobody could beat invitation entrants Lucky Khera and Lee Frost.

Running under the Race Lab banner in their BMW E46, the pair reigned supreme in both contests – the second by a commanding margin of more than 19 seconds. 

The Praga Cup continued its season in style with two one-hour races putting fans well and truly on the edge of their seats. Overall honours in race one went the way of the University of Wolverhampton Racing team, who had Shane Kelly and Stefano Leaney sharing driving duties.

After enduring a less than ideal result in the opener, Jimmy Broadbent and Gordie Mutch bounced back in race two to maintain their championship challenge, comfortably taking the chequered flag ahead of the Mittel Cars entry. 

Steve McDermid continued his sensational start to the Lancaster Insurance MG Owners Club Championship season with another double-winning performance. Defending the title he clinched last year, the MG ZR driver didn’t put a wheel wrong to strengthen his position at the standings summit.

It was all change in the Junior Saloon Car Championship as spoils were shared between two drivers, neither of which were Harry Hickton. Having been the benchmark since the get-go, Hickton had hoped to extend his winning streak but despite his best efforts he was forced to settle for a brace of second place finishes.

Gabriel Doyle-Parfait just edged Hickton in the first encounter before Maximus Hall came to the fore in race two, chalking up his second victory of the season. 

Nick Crispin and Lien Davies scored a win apiece in the Classic 2CV Racing Club whilst Bryan Bransom and Russell Dack were victorious in two the Kumho BMW Championship races. 

Rounding out the weekend’s action was a remarkable 45-minute bout from the Carbon8 Hyundai Coupe Cup, which ended with the top three being covered by little under a second. 

Adam Jones, Alistair Dendy, Luca Staccini, Alex Cursely and Wayne Rockett were all in the mix towards the sharp end of the grid however it was to be Jones that ultimately triumphed, narrowly pipping Dendy and Staccini in a run to the line.

British Touring Car Championship announces 2023 calendar

Series organisers of the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship, TOCA, have today (May 31) released the official calendar for the 2023 season.

Firmly established as the UK’s flagship motor sport series, the championship will once again comprise of 30 races across ten events at eight of the country’s top venues – with Donington Park most notably being handed a second event.

The Leicestershire venue will lift the curtain on the new campaign in late April before staging a second round in August on the Grand Prix circuit, a layout that the BTCC hasn’t used in more than two decades. 

Brands Hatch Indy, Snetterton, Thruxton and Oulton Park occupy dates during May and June before the annual summer break.

Croft is then scheduled to kick off the second half of the season before the series makes its annual visit to north of the border Knockhill. A second visit to Donington Park follows that before the penultimate weekend at Silverstone in late September and the finale on the legendary Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit in early October.

BTCC Chief Executive, Alan Gow, said: “I’m very pleased to be able to confirm our 2023 British Touring Car Championship calendar. We’ve never announced a following season schedule as early as May before, which provides great forward planning for our teams, partners, fans and all stakeholders.”

Josh Cook makes Thruxton history as BTCC takes centre stage in Hampshire

Josh Cook and Adam Morgan enjoyed a share of the spoils at Thruxton Circuit this past weekend (May 28/29) as the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship produced a blockbuster three races around the fastest track in the country.

Making the first of two visits to the home of the British Automobile Racing Club this season, the UK’s premier motorsport series saw history made as Cook became the most successful BTCC driver at the circuit after he scored two commanding wins. 

As had been the case at Donington Park and Brands Hatch, qualifying proved to be an ultra-competitive affair on Saturday as drivers guided their hybrid-powered-cars around the infamous 2.36-mile layout.

Rich Energy BTC Racing’s Cook – who arrived with an enviable record – produced the goods once again as he piloted his Honda Civic Type R to pole position, just 0.077s ahead of ROKiT MB Motorsport’s Jake Hill – who had topped the times until the latter stages.

Dan Cammish hustled his NAPA Racing UK Ford Focus to within 0.081s of pole however he ultimately settled for third, with Team BMW’s Colin Turkington and reigning champion Ash Sutton fourth and fifth respectively. 

Cook secured his place in the Thruxton history books as he charged to victory – a record eighth around the Hampshire venue – in race one. Briefly losing the lead to Hill off the line, the Honda ace fought back through the Complex to reclaim first place and then began to pull clear.

Despite coming under pressure from the BMW in the latter stages, the Bath racer held firm to become the undisputed King of Thruxton. Further back, the battle for the final step on the podium was hotly contested with Sutton producing a masterful defensive drive to fend off the chasing pack. 

Race two proved to be a carbon copy of the opener as Cook continued to reign supreme, chalking up a second win of the day. As was the case in the opening bout, the 30-year-old briefly lost the lead to Hill at the start but produced a sensational move at the Complex to regain control at the front.

Maintaining a steady gap to the rear-wheel-drive machine, Cook charged to the ninth win of his career at Thruxton whilst Hill and Sutton filled the remaining spots on the rostrum once again.

Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport’s Morgan then signed off the weekend in style with a commanding victory in the reverse grid encounter. Starting from the outside of the front row, the BMW driver jumped pole sitter Jason Plato off the line and never looked back.

Despite having Turkington and Sutton fill his mirrors throughout, Morgan didn’t put a wheel wrong to claim his first win of the season. The aforementioned multiple champions battled until the final corner but remained second and third respectively over the line. 

Leaving Thruxton, Cook leads Sutton in the BTCC Drivers’ Championship whilst he and Rich Energy BTC Racing also hold the advantage in the Independent Drivers’ and Independent Teams’ Championship as well. 

BMW hold the advantage in the BTCC Manufacturer-Constructors Championship having moved to the standings summit this past weekend. Bristol Street Motors with EXCELR8 TradePriceCars.com continue to head the Teams’ category with Bobby Thompson maintaining the upper hand in the Jack Sears Trophy.

Thruxton thrills for TOCA support championships

It wasn’t just the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship that had fans on the edge of their seats at Thruxton Circuit this past weekend (May 28/29) as the TOCA support championships also shared the headlines. 

Marking the first of two visits to the fastest circuit in the UK this year, five one-make categories took centre stage in Hampshire to write the latest chapter in what is already shaping up to be a blockbuster season across the board. 

The Protyre Motorsport Ginetta GT5 Challenge made their second appearance on the BTCC support bill and like their Junior counterparts, they didn’t disappoint. 

Harley Haughton – who has been one of the standout performers in the series thus far – was the driver to beat in Saturday’s opening bout as he charged from third on the grid to claim a well-deserved maiden victory. Haughton then repeated the feat on Sunday with a similarly commanding drive.

Elsewhere, Josh Rowledge and Ian Aguilera enjoyed a share of the spoils in what were two blockbuster Michelin Ginetta Junior Championship races – the second of which ended prematurely

There was plenty of wheel-to-wheel entertainment in the ROKiT F4 British Championship certified by FIA as Alex Dunne and Aiden Neate stood on the top step of the podium.

Despite starting on pole position, Dunne had to secure victory the hard way in race one as he battled back past Ugo Ugochukwu on lap four after losing the lead off the line. Once back in front, the Irishman powered clear to win and strengthen his title challenge. 

Dunne would go on to prevail in race three after Neate led an Argenti Motorsport 1-2 in an enthralling reverse grid contest on Sunday.

The Quaife MINI CHALLENGE Trophy – which boasted a bumper 30-car entry list – led the way with two frenetic races. Nelson King continued his sensational start to the season as he narrowly prevailed in the opening contest after pipping Louie Capozzoli and Matt Hammond in a drag to the line.

Capozzoli struck back in the second bout as he chalked up his first win of the year after fending off the advances of Alfie Glenie. King was declared the winner of the third race, which was twice affected by red flag stoppages. 

Rounding out the weekend’s track action was a pair of pulsating races from the Porsche Visit Cayman Islands Sprint Challenge GB. Now in its third season, the one-make series made its first appearance on the TOCA support package for this season with Harry Foster winning both bouts.

Classic Touring Car Racing Club headlines action-packed Oulton Park race day

The British Automobile Racing Club took centre stage at Oulton Park this past Saturday (May 28) for a full-throttle race day that had everyone captivated from start-to-finish. 

Organised and run by the Club’s North West Centre, a bumper crowd were treated to a feast of on-track entertainment around the Cheshire venue by the Classic Touring Car Racing Club and CNC Heads Sports/Saloon Car Championship. 

Spoils were shared in the Poultec Race Engines Pre 66 Touring Cars around the International layout with Alan Greenhalgh striking first, powering his Ford Falcon Sprint to victory in the opening bout. 

Greenhalgh could only manage third in the second encounter though as Barry Sime piloted his Morris Mini Cooper S to the top step of the podium by more than six seconds. 

Just one race was held for the Shell Oils Pre 83 Championship and Laser Tools Pre 93 Touring Cars, which amalgamated together. As he has done countless times before, Dave Griffin proved to be the driver to beat in his BMW E36 M3, narrowly pipping Stephen Primett to victory. 

After enjoying a sensational debut at Silverstone back in March, the Super Tourers returned to action alongside the Burty Haulage Pre 03 Touring Cars. Anthony Reid rolled back the years as he chalked up victory in his Nissan Primera in race one before Richard Wheeler came to the fore in race two in the sister Primera.

Richard Wood underlined his dominance in the combined Classic & Historic Thunder Saloons / Blue Oval Saloons Series races, guiding his Holden Commodore to the chequered flag in first place on both occasions.

Capping off the CTCRC excitement were two bouts from the Berkshire Jags Jaguar Challenge; where Tom Robinson and James Ramm reigned supreme to score a win apiece.

Rounding out the day’s track action was a pulsating CNC Heads Sports/Saloon Car Championship contest. Flying the flag for the Club’s North West Centre, the multi-class category produced a frenetic 12-lap contest which was ultimately won by Jon Woolfitt in his Spire GTR.

Entries for one of the biggest competitions in UK motorsport – the Ginetta Junior Scholarship – are now open, with one budding racing driver set to win a fully-funded season in the 2023 Michelin Ginetta Junior Championship. 

Taking place over a three-day period (October 25-27) at Ginetta’s own Blyton Park, the 13th running of the competition will see two qualifying days whittle down an anticipated capacity entry to a final group, who will then return for the final day of assessments. 

Entrants will be tested across a variety of areas including their driving behind the wheel of Ginetta’s G40, being in front of the media and taking on fitness tests.

Previous winners of the Scholarship include two-time W Series champion Jamie Chadwick, 2021 Ginetta GT4 Supercup title winner Adam Smalley, GT talent Daniel Harper and most recently Alisha Palmowski – who has made a flying start to her season already. 

Like years previous, the prize package for the winner will include payment of all entry fees, the use of a G40 Junior race car for the whole season including consumables, insurance and a season supply of race tyres and fuel, professional car preparation from an experienced team for the duration of the season and a Ginetta branded race suit. 

To be eligible for the 2023 event, competitors’ dates of birth must fall between 01/01/2007 and 20/04/2009 and they must not have previously competed in a motorsport circuit car race.
