The British Automobile Racing Club enjoyed a Platinum Jubilee weekend (June 4/5) to remember as it continued its 2022 season in style at Silverstone.

As much of the UK marked the Queen’s 70 years on the throne with street parties, the BARC  showcased some of its biggest and best championships on the Northamptonshire venues National circuit; and it didn’t disappoint.

Saturday saw the Britcar Trophy take centre stage around the Home of British Motor Racing as it served up two action-packed 50-minute bouts. Boasting a near 30-car grid, the series saw wheel-to-wheel battles run throughout the field however nobody could beat invitation entrants Lucky Khera and Lee Frost.

Running under the Race Lab banner in their BMW E46, the pair reigned supreme in both contests – the second by a commanding margin of more than 19 seconds. 

The Praga Cup continued its season in style with two one-hour races putting fans well and truly on the edge of their seats. Overall honours in race one went the way of the University of Wolverhampton Racing team, who had Shane Kelly and Stefano Leaney sharing driving duties.

After enduring a less than ideal result in the opener, Jimmy Broadbent and Gordie Mutch bounced back in race two to maintain their championship challenge, comfortably taking the chequered flag ahead of the Mittel Cars entry. 

Steve McDermid continued his sensational start to the Lancaster Insurance MG Owners Club Championship season with another double-winning performance. Defending the title he clinched last year, the MG ZR driver didn’t put a wheel wrong to strengthen his position at the standings summit.

It was all change in the Junior Saloon Car Championship as spoils were shared between two drivers, neither of which were Harry Hickton. Having been the benchmark since the get-go, Hickton had hoped to extend his winning streak but despite his best efforts he was forced to settle for a brace of second place finishes.

Gabriel Doyle-Parfait just edged Hickton in the first encounter before Maximus Hall came to the fore in race two, chalking up his second victory of the season. 

Nick Crispin and Lien Davies scored a win apiece in the Classic 2CV Racing Club whilst Bryan Bransom and Russell Dack were victorious in two the Kumho BMW Championship races. 

Rounding out the weekend’s action was a remarkable 45-minute bout from the Carbon8 Hyundai Coupe Cup, which ended with the top three being covered by little under a second. 

Adam Jones, Alistair Dendy, Luca Staccini, Alex Cursely and Wayne Rockett were all in the mix towards the sharp end of the grid however it was to be Jones that ultimately triumphed, narrowly pipping Dendy and Staccini in a run to the line.
