Championship battles intensify on TOCA support bill at Silverstone

Championship titles were decided whilst other saw the battle for supremacy further intensify this past weekend (September 25/26) on what was a pulsating two days of track action on the TOCA support package at Silverstone.

The Michelin Ginetta Junior Championship was at its entertaining best as spoils were shared across the weekend’s three races. Scholarship winner Robert De Haan continued his recent run of form in race one as he powered his way to an impressive victory.

Will Jenkins then came to the fore in race two as he claimed a maiden win of the season after a frenetic multi-car battle for top spot. Race three then saw a small piece of history made as De Haan netted his second win of the weekend – albeit by 0.010s – the smallest ever margin in the series’ history.

Dan Cammish stamped his authority on the Porsche Carrera Cup GB with a third win of the year to maintain his position at the top of the standings. Hot on the heels winning at Croft, the Redline Racing driver soaked up a huge amount of pressure from Lorcan Hanafin but didn’t put a wheel wrong to stand on the top step of the podium.

Earlier in the day, reigning champion Harry King kept his slender championship hopes alive by claiming victory in a race which was brought to an early end due to a red flag.

After an action-packed season, the destiny of the Quaife MINI CHALLENGE Trophy title went down to the final few corners of the final race with Dominic Wheatley ultimately reigning supreme.

Wins fell the way of Louie Capozzoli, Charlie Mann and Tom Ovenden over the course of the weekend but it was Wheatley that hung on in the end to be crowned champion, having not taken a win all season.

Champions were also crowned in the Ginetta GT Academy, which was making its first appearance on the TOCA support bill this season. In what is the inaugural year for the one-make series, the GT Academy served up a trio of action-packed races over the course of the weekend.

Martin Willis and Angus Whiteside shared the spoils however it was Toby Trice that wrapped up the main title, with Whiteside cementing his position as the lead rookie.

Rounding off the weekend’s racing were three races from the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost. Matias Zagazeta, Georgi Dimitrov and Joseph Look scored a win apiece as the rising stars of single-seaters served up a feast of entertainment.

Rory Butcher and Jake Hill claim BTCC wins as Ashley Sutton extends points lead at Silverstone

Rory Butcher and Jake Hill scored victory at Silverstone in the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship this past weekend (September 25/26) whilst reigning champion Ashley Sutton extended his advantage at the summit of the standings.

On what was a pivotal visit to the Home of British Motor Racing, the Laser Tools Racing driver produced a measured drive in races one and two before charging to the podium in race three to bolster his lead to 36 points.

Saturday around the 1.64-mile National layout arguably belonged to Toyota Gazoo Racing’s Butcher. Topping the times in both practice sessions, the Scotsman then went on to set the pace in Q1 of qualifying before claiming pole position in the Top Ten Showdown.

In what proved to be an ultra-competitive qualifying session where 29 of the 30 cars were covered by less than a second, Butcher charged to top spot ahead of Tom Ingram, Aiden Moffat and Josh Cook.

Butcher and Speedworks Motorsport’s remarkable weekend in the UK’s premier motorsport series continued on Sunday as they bagged a brilliant pair of wins.

Losing the lead to Ingram off the start in race one, the Corolla driver wasted no time in clawing it back as he lunged down the inside of the Hyundai driver at Brooklands on lap three. There was contention surrounding the move as Butcher was adjudged to have completed the pass under yellow flags however officials ruled that the move was legal.

Once out front, Butcher pulled clear to net his second win of the season whilst Ingram resisted the challenge of Adrian Flux with Power Maxed Racing’s Daniel Lloyd – who producing his best performance of the season to clinch third.

Race two saw Butcher take a more routine victory despite a late charge from BTC Racing’s Cook. Pulling clear of the competition, the race one victor held his nerve to withstand late pressure from the Honda driver.

Sadly, Cook would be disqualified from second place for failing the post-race ride height which promoted Ingram and Team BMW’s Colin Turkington into second and third.

The final bout of the weekend belonged to MB Motorsport’s Hill as he completed a sensational Sunday recovery. After qualifying outside the top 20, the Ford Focus driver fought his way to the front to triumphed in the reverse grid contest.

Starting third, Hill – who was a winner at Croft last time out – got the jump on Jason Plato and then set after pole sitter Lloyd, finally making a move stick at half distance heading into Copse.

Hill couldn’t relax however as the Vauxhall Astra driver remained a constant threat in his mirrors for the remainder of the race. Completing the podium was championship leader Sutton who charged from eighth to third.

Alongside two other top six finishes, the two-time champion left Silverstone having opened up his lead at the standings summit to 36 points with just six races remaining.

The pairing of Sutton and Laser Tools Racing also rule the roost in the Teams’ and Independents’ tables, whilst BMW heads the Manufacturers’/Constructors’ order. Halfords Racing with Cataclean’s Daniel Rowbottom remains in control of the Jack Sears Trophy.

Elsewhere, the weekend also saw history made as the BTCC Hybrid era began with Andrew Jordan piloting the all-new Hybrid Toyota Corolla, competing in all sessions as part of a development demonstration ahead of next year’s full introduction.

Ginetta GT4 Supercup to welcome Ginetta G56 in 2022

The Millers Oils Ginetta GT4 Supercup is set to enter a new era in 2022 with the Ginetta G56 set to be introduced into the championship.

Following in the footsteps of the current Ginetta G55 GT4 model, which has served the series since its launch in 2011, the G56’s will run to the exact same specification to those that compete in the British GT Championship this season.

The GT4 Supercup will continue its successful Pro and Am class format for 2022, which will give drivers of all experience levels the opportunity to race the G56. There will also be a third category for entrants wishing to compete in the existing G55 GT4 model.

BTCC announces commitment to more sustainable fuel from 2022

The Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship has announced its commitment to using a more sustainable fuel from the 2022 season and beyond.

Opening a tender process for the supply of a more sustainable fuel to the series from 2022-2026, TOCA chose Haltermann Carless, who have been supplying the unbranded TOCA control fuel to the BTCC for some 26 years, as the successful submission.

The BTCC’s new-for-2022 fuel – designated Hiperflo® R20 – has a total of 20% renewable components, comprising 15% second generation ethanol content and 5% of renewable hydrocarbons.

It is calculated by the manufacturer that this will give approximately an 18% reduction in greenhouse gasses when compared to current pump fuel, significantly lowering the fuel’s impact on the environment. In addition, the selected fuel is more sustainable than that which has recently been introduced to petrol stations throughout the UK.

The introduction of the new fuel next season will coincide with beginning of the BTCC’s Hybrid era.

Alan Gow, BTCC Chief Executive, said: “As the premier motorsport series in the UK it is only right that the BTCC continues to navigate a more sustainable pathway and we are pleased to be introducing a cleaner fuel from the 2022 season onwards.

“Congratulations to Haltermann Carless on its successful tender and we look forward to continuing our working relationship over the next five years.”

Goodwood rolls back the years at full-throttle Revival

The Goodwood Revival made a triumphant return this past weekend (September 18/19) as the glorious machines from yesteryear took centre stage in West Sussex.

Headlining the weekend’s festivities was the famous RAC TT Celebration which was open to closed cockpit GT cars. Darren Turner and Old Bryant proved to much for the opposition to win.

Fans of the early days of British Touring Car Championship had plenty to salivate over courtesy of the St Mary’s Trophy. Romain Dumas and Bill Shephard shared driving duties in the Ford Thunderbird to take a win apiece, which collated in them claiming overall victory when results were combined.

The iconic Mini Cooper – which was marking its 60th anniversary – was celebrated via the John Whitmore Trophy Presented by Sure. Nick Swift and Andrew Jordan teamed up to produce a commanding performance to take the chequered flag by more than 20 seconds.

On the weekend where he would have celebrated his 92nd birthday, Stirling Moss was honoured with a memorable parade and with the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy, which was open to 1960s GT racers.

After a full-throttle hour of competition, the team of Harvey Stanley and James Cottingham drove their Jaguar E-Type to victory lane by just over two seconds from their nearest challengers.

David Hart and Ben Mitchell meanwhile were victorious in the Freddie March Memorial Trophy and Richmond Trophy respectively. In the Brooklands Trophy, the team of Pittaway and Williams drove their 1932 Frazer Nash TT Replica to the chequered flag.

World Championship Sportscars from the 1950s took centre stage in the Sussex Trophy Presented by Lifebuoy and it didn’t disappoint as Cottingham piloted a Tojeiro-Jaguar to the top step of the podium.

The Whitsun Trophy – which is for Sports Prototypes up to 1966 – saw Phil Keen power a Lotus-Ford 30 to victory whilst Mark Gillies claimed a narrow win in the Festival of Britain Trophy.

Elsewhere, Andy Middlehurst was a comfortable winner in the Glover Trophy and Peter De Lan Roche charged to victory in the coveted Chichester Cup.

Rounding out what was a weekend to remember were two Settrington Cup races for Austin J40 Pedal Cars. Jon Bain was declared the winner when times were combined across both entertaining races.

It wasn’t just four wheels that had fans on the edge of their seats with the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy seeing the duo of Dunlop and Plater combining to score victory in the scheduled two races.

Aiden Moffat, Jake Hill & Colin Turkington score BTCC wins at Croft

Aiden Moffat, Jake Hill and Colin Turkington scored a win apiece as the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship took centre stage at Croft this past weekend (September 18/19).

For the first time in more than two years, thousands of fans descended on the North Yorkshire venue for a full-throttle trio of races from Britain’s premier motorsport series – and they were given plenty of entertainment.

Two red flag stoppages meant qualifying on Saturday proved to be a truncated affair however it ultimately wouldn’t stop Aiden Moffat from scoring a maiden BTCC pole position.

With a flurry of improvements coming late in the session, the Laser Tools Racing driver set a sensational lap to pip MB Motorsport’s Jake Hill to top spot whilst Colin Turkington and local driver Senna Proctor locking out the second row.

Leading from the front, Moffat didn’t put a wheel wrong in the opening encounter to score his first win of the season. Holding the lead off the line, the Infiniti Q50 driver fended off the race-long challenge from Jake Hill to score his first victory since 2018.

Yorkshire’s own Senna Proctor gave the local fans plenty to cheer about too as he rounded out the podium in third. The BTC Racing driver got the jump on Colin Turkington during the opening lap and held position for the remainder of the 18-lap bout.

Race two saw Hill come to the fore as he cruised to a commanding win. Muscling his way past the pole sitter Moffat heading into the Complex on early on, the MB Motorsport drove got his head down and pulled clear as action ensued behind.

With Hill making his escape out front, an almighty battle for second place played out with Moffat – now ladened with 75kgs – fending off the chasing pack of Josh Cook, Colin Turkington, Senna Proctor, Gordon Shedden, Ashley Sutton and Tom Ingram.

As positions changed hands, Moffat continued to hang on to second with the Honda of Cook managing to clinch the third ahead of fellow title contenders Ingram and Sutton.

The reverse grid race would see West Surrey Racing celebrate their 700th race in the series in style as ‘King of Croft’ Turkington charged to his 13th victory at the venue.

Drawn onto pole position after finishing seventh in the previous race, the Northern Irishman produced a measured drive as he pulled clear of the chasing pack to record his third win of the campaign.

Behind, fans were captivated by the battle for second place between Shedden and Sutton. Despite showing his nose on a number of occasions, the championship leader couldn’t find a way past the Scotsman and ultimately settled for third.

Leaving Croft, Sutton’s advantage at the summit of the standings now sits at 29 points ahead of Hill, who has moved into second.

The Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship heads to the Home of British Motor Racing, Silverstone, this coming weekend (September 25/26) for the eighth event of the 2021 campaign.

Croft crowd entertained by all-action TOCA support championships

Croft Circuit played host to a memorable seventh event of the season for the TOCA support package this past weekend (September 18/19) as five championships served up all-out action for the huge crowd in attendance.

Taking centre stage alongside the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship at the North Yorkshire venue and approaching the business end of the season, every point was crucial as title contenders fought tooth and nail across both days.

Dan Cammish hit the top of the standings in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB as he clinched victory on home turf. Starting from pole position, the Yorkshireman didn’t put a wheel wrong as he claimed victory. Kiern Jewiss would do the same in race two.

The Millers Oils Ginetta GT4 Supercup saw the pendulum once again swing between protagonists Adam Smalley and Tom Hibbert during the weekend’s three races.

After storming to pole position, Hibbert produced a commanding lights-to-flag victory in the opener before Smalley struck back in race two. Josh Rattican then made it three different winners from three races as he stormed to victory in the final bout.

Making a welcome return to the BTCC support bill was the Protyre Motorsport Ginetta GT5 Challenge and it too staged a pair of frenetic contests. Race one would see a late safety car set up a one-lap shootout which was ultimately won by Magnus Kriklywi whilst Steven Dailly triumphed in race two.

Dan Zelos continued to make strides in his quest for championship glory in the Quaife MINI CHALLENGE UK. Sitting in second place for much of the opening race, the Excelr8 Motorsport driver pounced in the closing stages to wrestle the win from Jack Davidson.

Race two proved to be a pulsating encounter as Isaac Smith held off the charging Max Bird to claim victory, with hometown hero Max Coates giving the crowd plenty to cheer as he finished third.

Rounding out the weekend’s action were a trio of sensational races from the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost. After storming to a pair of pole position starts, McKenzy Cresswell enjoyed a dream outing as he netted a brace of wins.

Dougie Bolger meanwhile became the tenth different winner in the single-seater series as he triumphed in an entertaining reverse grid bout.

Blockbuster BARC action headlines truck-tastic Snetterton weekend

The British Automobile Racing Club produced a blockbuster two days of wheel-to-wheel entertainment at Snetterton this past weekend (September 18/19).

Headlining the weekend were the heavyweight behemoths of the British Truck Racing Championship – and they didn’t disappoint those watching trackside.

Saturday would see Martin Gibson and Ryan Smith score a win apiece in Division 1 whilst Division 2 honours would fall the way of Craig Reid as he powered his Iveco Stralis to an impressive brace.

On Sunday, former champion David Jenkins, John Newell and Gibson triumphed in the premier class whilst Reid continued his winning streak in Division 2, charging to victory in every bout.

From the five tonne monsters of the BTRC to the pocket rockets of the Legends Cars National Championship with MRF Tyres – there was something for everyone at the Norfolk venue.

Serving up six frenetic races across the weekend, the trio of Will Gibson, Chris Needham and John Mickel shared the spoils on day one before championship leader Miles Rudman fired back with a sensational hat-trick on day two.

The Classic Touring Car Racing Club took fans on spirited trip down memory lane as they showcased some of the best tin tops from yesteryear. Boasting packed grids throughout their championships, the CTCRC edged closer to its finale in style.

Mark Lucock and Thomas Harvey were victorious in the Pre ’66/Pre ’83 races whilst Gary Prebble reigned supreme in the two Pre ’93/Pre ’03 duels.

Elsewhere, James Card powered his way to a win the Class Thunder/BOSS contests, before going on to win the second race. Rounding out the CTCRC extravaganza was two races from the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club which were won by Tom Robinson.

George Turiccki remains on course to retain his Pickup Truck Racing Championship title after producing a faultless performance which saw his charge to two wins.

Nothing could split Steve McDermid and Fergus Campbell in the Lancaster Insurance MG Owners Club Championship. The pair claimed a win and a second place finish apiece to rule the roost in the much-loved multi-class series.

Rounding out the weekend’s action was a 45-minute bout from the Uncle Luke’s Snetterton Saloons which was won by Phil Knibb.

BTCC heads to Croft with title battle poised to intensify

Croft Circuit provides the next stop on the calendar for the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship this weekend (September 18/19) and its set to see the battle for supremacy in the fight for the title only intensify.

Entering the business end of the 2021 season, the North Yorkshire venue will play host to Rounds 19, 20 & 21 and every point and position is set to be pivotal for those aiming to maintain their title challenges.

After being forced to stage the BTCC behind closed doors last year, this weekend is set to be a significant one for Croft as it gets set to welcome an expected bumper crowd trackside to watch Britain’s premier motorsport series in action for the first time in more than two years.

Reigning champion Ashley Sutton enters the seventh event of the year as the driver to beat having extended his lead in the championship to 30 points last time out at Thruxton. Chalking up his fourth win of the season, the Laser Tools Racing driver has been in superlative form and he shows no sign of letting up.

Since debuting in 2016, Croft has proven to be a happy hunting ground for the double champion and despite carrying 75kgs of success ballast, the Infiniti Q50 driver will be optimistic of extending his lead on the chasing pack once more.

Behind Sutton, just 11 points split four drivers. Tom Ingram leads the chase for Sutton in his Ginsters EXCELR8 with TradePriceCars.com Hyundai ahead of BTC Racing’s Josh Cook, MB Motorsport’s Jake Hill and Team BMW’s Colin Turkington.

Adam Morgan, Rory Butcher and Daniel Rowbottom have all stood on the top step of the podium this year and each one of them will be keen to do so once more as they bid

One driver that is still chasing a win this year is triple champion Gordon Shedden. The Halfords Racing with Cataclean driver has endured a rollercoaster campaign however the Scotsman can never be counted out.

Local fans will have two homegrown heroes to cheer on too in the shape of Senna Proctor and Daniel Lloyd. Despite missing the season-opener, BTC Racing’s Proctor has proven to be one of the form drivers this year with a pole, win and three further podiums his reward.

Adrian Flux with Power Maxed Racing’s Lloyd meanwhile has endured his fair share of highs and lows this year but three races on home turf – at the venue where he scored his maiden BTCC win back in 2018 – could be just what he needs.

Beyond the top ten in the standings, a number of drivers will be keen to make their mark around the 2.1-mile circuit, including double champion Jason Plato who continues his quest to reach a century of BTCC victories.

Elsewhere, the likes of Tom Chilton, Aiden Moffat, Jack Goff, Tom Oliphant, Stephen Jelley, Jade Edwards and Aron Taylor-Smith will all be worth keeping an eye on.

Tickets to the BTCC’s only north-eastern event of the year can be purchased on the gate over the course of the weekend priced at £15.00 for Saturday entry, £35.00 for Sunday and £43.00 for both days. Children 12 and under accompanied by an adult are admitted to the circuit free of charge, whilst teens will need to purchase a ‘teen ticket’.

Goodwood Revival primed for eagerly-anticipated return after sabbatical

Goodwood Motor Circuit will reverberate to the sounds of horsepower from a bygone era this weekend (September 17/18/19) as the Goodwood Revival makes a triumphant return.

Taking place for the first time since 2019, the three-day event is one of the highlights of the historic racing calendar and after a pandemic-enforced sabbatical, it appears to be back and better than ever.

As has been the case for a number of years, the British Automobile Racing Club will once again play a pivotal role in running the meeting too.

Combining class motorcycle and car racing with 1950s and 1960s period dress, there is something for everyone when attending the Duke of Richmond’s Sussex circuit – with fun for all the family guaranteed.

However, it is on track where a majority of the entertainment will be found. Traditional contests such as the RAC TT Celebration for GT cars, the St. Mary’s Trophy for touring cars and Glover Trophy for F1 machines from yesteryear will headline the action.

Elsewhere; the Chichester Cup, Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy, Whitsun Trophy, Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy, Festival of Britain Trophy, Richmond Trophy, Brooklands Trophy and Freddie March Memorial Trophy will also take place.

The John Whitmore Trophy is expected to have fans on the edge of their seats as this year it will be fought over in what is expected to be a frenetic 45-minute, two-driver race to celebrate the Mini Cooper.

Some of the notable names to be competing over the course of the weekend includes Jenson Button, Andrew Jordan, Matt Neal, Martin Brundle, David Brabham and Tiff Needell, amongst many, many more.

Five BARC championships set for Snetterton showdown

The British Automobile Racing Club travels to Snetterton this coming weekend (September 18/19) for two days of track action that has all the hallmarks of having those in attendance on the edge of their seats from start-to-finish.

As the battle for supremacy in the race for titles begins to ramp, the Norfolk venue is set to stage no less than 24 races over the course of Saturday and Sunday – and none are worth missing.

Undoubtedly headlining the action will be five colossal contests from the five-tonne, 1000bhp behemoths of the British Truck Racing Championship. In what has already proven to be a captivating season, the race for top spot in both Division’s 1 and 2 is taking shape.

David Jenkins leads the way in the Division 1 ranks, albeit by a slender six-point margin. Boasting a wealth of experience, the former champion knows what it takes to win a championship and he will need to draw on all of it if he is to fend off the likes of Martin Gibson and reigning title holder Ryan Smith.

Over in Division 2 it is beginning to become a two-horse race for championship honours. Just 14 points split Craig Reid and Steven Powell as it stands, with the pendulum likely poised to swing to either one of them.

The Legends Cars National Championship with MRF Tyres has once again served up a feast of entertainment this year and heading to Snetterton, Miles Rudman is in the box seat to regain his crown.

After winning five out of the six races at Donington Park last month, Rudman has built ups healthy lead at the standings summit. However, he’ll need to continue his fine run of form if he’s to withstand the challenge from the likes of Will Gibson, John Mickel and Jack Parker, to name but a few.

Snetterton is the latest destination for the Pickup Truck Racing Championship, with two races scheduled to play out around the challenging 2.99-mile circuit. George Turiccki has proven to be the benchmark this season so far and it’s expected he will be in the mix again.

Fans will take a trip down memory lane during the weekend as well thanks to the Classic Touring Car Racing Club. Showcasing the very best tin tops from yesteryear, a stunning eight races will take place for the CTCRC

Drivers such as Alan Greenhalgh, Barry Sime, Mike Luck, Ian Bower, Garry Prebble, AJ Owen, David Howard, Piers Grange and Andy Robinson have all enjoyed strong campaigns and they, like many others, will have their sights set on silverware.

The Lancaster Insurance MG Owners Club Championship will also be there and looking to steal the show as it embarks on the penultimate event of its 2021 season. Taking fans on a spirited trip down memory lane, the single-manufacturer series showcases some of the very best models to boast the MG badge.

Notable names to look out for over the course of Saturday’s two bouts include Steve McDermid, Jim Baynam, David Amphlett and Chris Pollard, amongst many more.

Capping off the weekend’s action alongside the BARC programme will be two races from the Snetterton Saloons.
