Mallory Park played host to a memorable race day this past Saturday (May 1) as two more British Automobile Racing Club championships kicked off their 2021 campaigns.
On what was the first of several scheduled visits to the Leicestershire venue over the course of the year, those competing took on a starring role during a full-throttle day of track action.
Headlining Saturday’s billing were two races from the Pickup Truck Racing Championship on the challenging one-mile Oval layout. Having not raced in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event marked the first time the series had competed since November 2019 – and it certainly made up for its absence.
Delivering two pulsating contests, Reece Jones set his stall out as a credible title contender as he bagged victory in each race. Reigning champion George Turiccki tallied a brace of podiums whilst there were also rostrum finishes for Dean Tompkins and Michael Smith.
The Lancaster Insurance MG Owners Club Championship also raised the curtain on a brand new season at the picturesque track and it too didn’t disappoint as it served up a trio of enthralling contests.
Boasting a bumper 17-car grid, the multi-class category showcased a range of iconic models from the popular manufacturer, and one driver proved to be a class above the rest. Despite narrowly missing out on pole position in qualifying, Steve McDermid took centre stage to claim a sensational hat-trick of wins in his MG ZR 170.
Elsewhere, single seater thrills and spills were provided by the Avon Tyres Northern & Super Classic Formula Ford Championship. Joey Foster proved to be the dominant force as he topped the podium twice.
Rounding off the days action were two races from the Northern Saloon & Sports Car Championship. Having powered his Spire GTR to pole position for both encounters, Jon Woolfitt made no mistake in either race to claim a brace of commanding victories.
