Brands Hatch saw history made this past weekend (November 18/19) as Rod Birley surpassed Gerry Marshall for the most race wins in the UK.
Two weeks after suffering a high-speed crash in his Ford Escort at the Kent circuit, the West Kingsdown resident was back behind the wheel, this time sharing his trusty Honda Integra with Jon Bevan, whose family prepared his very first racing car.
Chalking up his 600th career victory earlier this season, Birley had set his sights on Gerry Marshall’s benchmark of 625 wins, but was unsure whether he would be able to achieve it in 2017.
Taking two saloon car wins at the weekend, Birley firstly matched then passed Marshall to lead the way for the most race wins recorded in the UK.
Birley began competing in 1973 and much of his success has come at Brands Hatch, with more than 200 of his 626 wins secured at his local venue.
“I am really pleased that I managed to break the wins record at Brands Hatch, where I have enjoyed most of my success,” Birley said on the achievement.
“Quite appropriately, it was with the Bevan family, as George Bevan built my very first race engine for a Hillman Imp back in 1973.
“It’s probably not the most sensible thing I have done, as I still have a couple of cracked ribs from the big crash two weeks ago!”
